I have a small chrysler motor that the dogs on the forward gear are worn a bit. Can these be fixed by a dremel or machinist, or do they normally just have to be replaced?

thanks

You say worn a bit.Is it comming out of gear? How much is a bit? It's possible to cut with a dremmel.Or you can possibly turn it around.Post a pic.Jerry

If you decide to try grinding them with a Dremel, buy the 1/8 inch straight CARBIDE bit for around 12 bucks. Run the Dremel about 1/2 speed and use a bit of cutting oil. Don't overheat the bit--grind a little and stop and so on. I have found that the stones they sell wear down too quickly so I don't bother with them. The wear marks on the dogs usually give a good indication of how far back to grind and will also help you keep them even.

I had mine milled by my dad who is a machinist. all he did was put it in an indexing fixture and milled it until the corners were sharp again.

Re: dogs on back of gear

it was slipping out of gear, but I also found out that my shift rod was about 2 turns screwed out too far in the lower unit. It wasnt in the correct position according to my manual. I havent been able to lake test it since the adjustment.

with that said...the dogs on the forward gear are worn though. It doesnt look too bad though. They arent quite square, more of a bit slanted in spots.

I am hoping it is just the adjustment that will help the situation but only time will tell.

how did you guys that have shaped the dogs on your gears make sure and keep the clutch dog equally engaging both dogs?

did you do any measuring or anything?

thanks
