The short trip I had planned 2 weeks ago didnt happin because the weather called for heavy rain all day the one full day I wanted to pier fish at the coast. I going with an old friend who has to get off work 3 days for trip so this complicates things. Well I have planned again to go this week BUT again the the weather seems to be calling for "showers" I dont mind a little on and off rain and my question is can I expect the fishing to be pretty much be the same or worse . Does the rain scare the fish away?

The absolute best time to fish is right before one of these winter fronts moves thru the area. You may get a little wet but the returns are usually worth the effort

I've fished in down pours and "horizontal rain? more than I care to remember. My big fish last year came off the beach last year at 4 am in a passing thunder storm. We where hiding behind a truck for cover from the horizontal rain when the rod went down.

Don't let a "little" rain get in the way of a good day of fishing. Put on a pair of chest waders and a good rain jacket and go at it.

I agree with dingbat. Lots of the rain down here is associated with a passing front, the fish sense the barometer change and it starts a feeding pattern. Also, with our afternoon passing showers I have been out in, I have not remembered the fishing changing at all. Did not help, nor improve.

I do agree with the above posts. Some of the best fishing is right before a low pressure moves through. If it is just an afternoon shower, fish away. If it is a front though, you may just want to call it a day once it moves in. I have caught some good fish in the middle of an afternoon shower though. Good luck anyway you go!!

I have found that a little ran helps out with fishing. First i have had some of my best catches in bad weather, and another bonus is that you wont run into a lot of people ,always a plus

Well I went and faced gale forse winds and heavy rain. It would have been dangerious to even try to get on to the pier. Terrible weather 10 times worse that what the weather report led me to believe.

I agree, fishing in the rain is a part of fishing, but..........................in Jax, Florida on the Saint John's river I remember one of those Florida storm cells hit our boat. We had to frantically bail out our boat, not fun. So if you boat in the rain, have a way to bail you boat.

Fishing in the rain= no problem.
Fishing in a thunder/lightening storm= big problem.

Some of the best fishing I've ever had in the Gulf of Mexico was in the rain, for the reasons everyone has already mentioned. One that I particularly remember was my son and I moving further out ahead of some small thunderheads until we got to the last oil rig. I thought they would dissipate, but they didn't.The next landfall would have been Cuba ,so we tied off to the rig to get into it's "cone of protection" from any lightning. Sure enough, the lightning started and it was SCARY. My son got me to explain the "cone of protection' again and we kept fishing. We caught red snapper, cobia and king mackeral until our arms hurt. All the while, king mackeral were blasting up through schools of baitfish going 15 to 20 feet in the air. It was spectacular, but would'nt want to do it again in lightning.

The "cone of protection"?? You've got to explain.

Haven't you ever seen "Get Smart" (the original series, haven't seen the recent movie yet)? Or is that the "cone of silence".

I've seen Get Smart, but the "cone of silence" didn't work.

I'm an electrical engineer and the theory is that a grounded metal structure will absorb any lightning disharges from the top of the structure out to a radius equal to the structures height. If you plot it out it makes a cone shaped figure. As far as I personnally know, this is just a theory and I wouldn't count on it unless I had to. The best place to be in lightning is inside a sturdy building. Definitely NOT out in a boat where you are the tallest thing around.

I not recognize that theory as the one that says stay in your car during a electrical storm.
I think though, that since my boat is made out of non-conductive fiberglass and I am a bag of electrolyte, that my safety in not insured.
In fact, I think the "cone of protection" might work as well as the "cone of silence".
Bottom line, I will fishing in the rain, but not in a lightning storm.

Re: Fishing in the rain?

:confused:As part of this I was wondering if fishing in rain will change what type of fish is caught. I catch snook and red and black drum alot but i've never known if the rain has effected it.

I am not as familiar with boat fishing in the rain. Now, stream fishing for trout, I feel I have improved odd when it is raining. I figure that the trout can't see me as well and therefore don't spook as much.

In the ocean or deep water, except for the possibility of the fish feeling changes in barometric pressure, I don't think rain is noticed.
