Adding railing

I have 2 12" handrails that I want to add to the aft section, either mounted on the transom facing behind the boat, or on the top facing up. What is the best way to fasten them to the boat? Should I thru-bolt them alone, or should I add a backer board for better distribution. They're going to be used for helping the kids onto the boat from the swim platform, and (this is going to make everyone cringe) to mount some rail mounted rod holders for (possibly ) light trolling.

on top with backing, the rod mount will work better. i always believe in making a boat work double duty.

Beefer, for that application you probably do not need any backer. Some reasonable washers under the nuts should be sufficient.

For a cleat you would need a backer.

My rule of thumb is to make any boat accessory twice as strong as you think you need. Hence, if you think screws would hold it, you better thru bolt it!

thats why i said backer, Kids can be 30 lbs, or 250lbs.
