Too much $ for this boat?

So I'm about to buy a boat but I wanted some opinions on it. I know almost nothing about boats so I'm not sure if it is fair price. Its a 16' lund. I only have a few photos. The person selling it to me works at a local marina and is moving so he wants to get rid of it. Says it has no leaks and he replaced a few rivets cause they were getting loose. The only real big damage to it is the rail on the side is a little banged up. The hull doesn't appear to have any real damage. I'm picking it up for $175. Too much or good price?

I'd wave a $100 bill under his nose and see what happens.

Well he wanted 250 and i just said no. He came back with 175. He claims others are "interested" but I'm not sure. After looking on craigslist it seems like it could be a good price, but there is not a lot to compare too.

16 footers are hard to find used in our area. I'd say its a great deal unless it leaks. Did he do a good job on the rivets? Wash some of the muck out of it and check.

Re: Too much $ for this boat?

hi
$175 seems like a good price to me. if you flip it over and there are no major dents or the keel isn't bent it's probably a good deal. i was on hwy 10 last weekend and between st cloud and motley i saw 4 or 5 basic 14-16 ft lunds either the classic red/silver or blue /silver with 3 bench seats along side the road for sale. they ranged from $200-500. so it would seem like the price is in the low end of market value. and if you don't have to drive anywhere to get it that's worth $30 in gas. in minnesota it is hard to go wrong with a basic lund. if it is a lund and it floats you can get $150-200 for it on craigslist all summer long. so if you have the $175 you can't get yourself in trouble buying it.

According to him he had them "professionally" done. I seem to trust this guy more than most because he works at a boat shop in the service dept. Like I said I don't know much about boats but when I looked over the rivets they all seemed solid.

I think that $175 is a good price considering all you can do with that boat. You can basically make it into anything you want. Does it come with a trailer?

Sadly no it doesn't come with a trailer. So I'm also in the market for one of those...cheap. I found a few people with some trailers on Freecycle but they come with boats, that are too beat up for me. I have big plans for this thing...hopefully the dreams turn into reality and not a nightmare.

If you find a free aluminum boat with trailer, you could sell the boat to a scrap yard. But a fiberglass boat will cost you to cut it up for the landfill.

What about power? Do you have a motor for it already or do you have to buy one?

I have a 20hp merc. Its an older motor I got from my dad...I think about the same as the boat early 70's. I think its a bit on the smaller side but for the small lake I fish on its plenty. I usually have to go more than about 100 yards from the dock to my favorite spot.

I'd buy it! You seem to like it and will fill your needs. Lunds are very solid hulls and if later you decide it's not what you want you should have no trouble getting your money back out of it.

Pictures don't look too bad. Doesn't look like it was drove up on the rocks.

Watch craigslist for trailers. I've seen then in the Minn./Wis areas for under a hundred bucks.

I Did! It was delivered last night! Now I just need summer to come back around...oh yeah, and a trailer. I've been looking on craigslist and I have found a few here and there. I also put a posting on freecycle and got two people that wanted to give me their trailers...oh and their boats. Both would be fun projects but to much time and money is required I think. I could pick it up and bring it to the dump but I would feel bad dumping a perfectly good boat just so I can get the trailer. I'll just keep looking. Thanks for the input!

I like it too. I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to do all the things I was dreaming but we will see.

get trailer and boat, then give boat away. i have put 2 boats on a trailers, and a sign free boat only. towed them to the peoples yards, and pushed the off the trailers.

One step at a time, one step at a time. Just like walking, if you don't take the first one you can't take the rest. You have that one behind you now.

Have fun!

I thought really hard about that. The trailers i found are in the twin cities area, we live 3.5 hours away. I'm nervous to drive something liek that that far. otherwise i would.

thanks for the idea though.
