I have a 79 merc 115 hp with the hydraulic cylinder tilt, not power tilt, the motor has been rebuilt 3 years ago, how much is this thing really worth? I just put a new piranha prop and have a extra prop for it. I just put it on ebay yesterday! I started the bidding at 300.00 and put a buy it now for 1,050.00 and i am from central wisconsin.

Please i'm looking for a estimated value of how much the motor is worth.

thanks

Man if you already listed it I think you will know what it is worth in 7 days.
The last bid is the current value and not anymore.

yea, but how much is it honestly worth? The bluebook prices arn't right! It said 240.00! You can't even buy a 1950 15 hp for that price! I was looking for some opinions on the price.

thanks

For a realistic value, look at similar engines and see what they sold for... At that age, that is the only way to do it. The 'book value' is usually worked out on depreciation, not sale value.

Craig: The last bid on ebay is the value as somebody already stated.

You have a 29 year old engine. Way do ya want to sell it? They are great engines!

I own and have owned many of the old inline six Mercs.

The 1979 115 that I bought in 2001 (for $500) in the Seattle area with controls still runs great for me.

It depends on the size of the metro area ya live in and the proximity to water and demand fer old engines and mechanics that will werk on 'em. Seattle has quite a few.

#1 Is the engine salty? (Not a favorable facter ya prefer a fresh water engine)

#2 How is the wiring, starter, solenoid?

#3 How is the fuel system, lines, carbs, (any leaks)?

#4 When was the last time the water pump was changed?

#5 Does it look good and clean inside and out?

#6 Does it fire right up and idle, shift into forward and reverse with no problems with a strong water stream from the tell tale?

#7 Does it have excessive end play on the flywheel?

#8 "Rebuilt" is a negative (to me). Why did it need a rebuild? Overheat, bad pistons yada yada? Most of my old inlines, (I have two 1969 Merc 1000s that are fresh water virgins with even cornpression that run great), so if the engine has had proper care and storage it should not need any rebuild.

Hope that helps. JR

The engine runs great and has only been in fresh water! I replaced the impeller last year, It was rebuilt because it had lower compression, the rings were worn out. There's nothing wrong with it, but the wires inside are starting to "coating\insulations" is starting to fall off on a few wires. I have no use for the motor, I traded a car and a boat for a like the guys said "MINT" condition 4 wheeler 2004 yamaha 450yfz, BUT I got the wheeler when i dropped off the car, and the wheeler needed alot of work, the guy was a jerk, and so i asked him for 300.00 for the parts for the wheeler to be in mint, and he said no F*** you to me, so i said well i will keep my boat motor and you can have just the boat. So he agreed, I JUST WANNA MAKE SURE I GET WHAT ITS WORTH, thats all. I don't wanna get hosed selling it. The carbs are great and the fuel lines inside the motor are as well. Everything on the motor inside and out are in great shape, the cover has the graphics from factory in great shape. Motors don't last forever without rebuilding and taking care of them. Its better to rebuild when you notice it getting weak, than to let it blow up and cause you more money and more headaches.

All I can say is there is nothing wrong but the few wires starting to bare wire.

The 1979 115 that I bought a few years ago for $500. had and still has great compression and the internal wiring harness was perfect, the engine still runs and looks very good from idle to 5500 RPMs.

The 1969 Merc 1000, (short shaft which is a bit rare now), that I bought two years ago fer $300, needed a wairing harness, (that I already had), some new fuel lines and fittings, and was a fresh water engine with great compression, (still had the wire nuts on the crank case [so she's a virgin :D ]).

I may a little pay more then $500 for a 115 (with power trim in great shape), (but not much more).

Good luck. JR
