does someone have a pic they can post of the inside pull cord wire springs? mine popped out and am unsure on how to rout them to engage the plastic piece that catches the flywheel notch.

There is one loopy wire that goes in the groove. There are two links that go from each end of the loopy wire to each end of the plastic pawl. An "E" ring holds the plastic pawl on the pulley. That's it.

I will try to remember to take a picture of it tomorrow night. I have an extra that is not yet mounted on my motor, but not at home. This is off a '59. Hope this helps.

Manual starter on bench, upside down, pulley facing you.

There are three (3) wire things. One (1) "U" (sort of) shaped thing, and two (2) hook like things.

The "U" shape thing goes in the groove of the spindle (big round thing in middle of pulley). The 2 hook wire things hook onto that "U" shaped thing with the square looking portion of those hook things hooking onto the nylon pawl.

Having the pulley so that the pawl would be on the far side of the pulley, away from you, the pawl should be facing to the left.

Does this help you?

thats sounds right, i got the motor used, and had a problem with the starter cord not engaging sometimes, i pulled the cover and pulley houseing off and found just the 2 wires hooked to the nylon pawl. ive been able to use it, just sometimes takes a few pulls for the pawl to engage the flywheel.

You're saying that you're missing the "U" shaped thing?

The u shaped thing provides friction, which by way of the links, causes the nylon pawl to rock outward to engage the flywheel as the rope is pulled. And retracts the pawl as the rope goes back in. Love the technical descriptions?

Re: pull cord springs, 18 horse fasttwin

good description, very understandable. well i popped the cover off and found a bent piece of wire that may have been a "u" at one time. using your description on how it works, i think i got it bent enough, as its catching the notch and releasing. it is catching within the first 6-12", where before it would be bout halfway out sometimes, so it mustve been unhooked for a while.
thanks all for the help.

I actually took the picture today, but won't be home to download it until some time tomorrow. I will post it anyway, just in case someone refers back to this post in the future. I want to put it on my running motor, as the one that is currently on there has the problem you were describing. When you pull it doesn't engage until about half way out.

be nice to see how big the u should be, as i ended up shortening it a little. i would have never guessed how it was supposed to go on my own.

I'll take a look in the morning to see if I have those items in my remaining stock and will get back to you.

You can replace all the parts necessary, even the E-clip, for about $30 from any E-rude dealer. The online OMC-Bombardier site has a parts list...it only goes back to like 1968, but that's close enough to yours to work. Took me about 10 minutes to install new recoil parts and fix the same problem on my old 55 OMC 15 hp a year or so ago. Took longer to get the cowl and recoil mech off than it did to fix/replace the parts.

so thats what its supposed to look like, i sent away for the springs as the dealers round here are hard to find for the older motors, and so they jack the price and dont kiss you after. thanks for the pic, it will come in handy.

Re: pull cord springs, 18 horse fasttwin

I got some good news today! The recoil that I took a picture of was taken off my parts motor, and I was planning to put it on the good motor because that one wasn't grabbing anymore. Well, when I took the one off the boat motor, I noticed that the center nut underneath was loose, allowing the center spindle (friction point) to rotate! I tightened the nut and it works great! That was cheap and easy!

That center spindle should have a locating pin that locks into a hole in the housing.

Re: pull cord springs, 18 horse fasttwin

hmmmm, really?

The center piece was spinning, so I tightened the nut (or was it a bolt?) and it stopped spinning. When I put it back on the motor, it worked great.

Oh well, if it ever fails, I will take it apart. I was mostly concerned with avoiding the SSSPPPPPRRRROOOOIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!

I also noticed that the cord is only about 5' long and that I could still unwind it more manually. I think I read here somewhere that the rope should be 6' long? I may replace that rope someday, but with electric start, that is way down the list of things to do.
