Am trying to determine a fair asking price for a 1986 long shaft Johnson 7.5hp outboard motor. The motor was purchased new and never used. Long story, the basics of which are that my Dad thought he could use it for a trolling motor on a 20 plus foot Larson but never got it rigged up. Dad passed away last year and I am selling stuff I have no use of to spend the cash on that which I do at the property we own on Sebago Lake in Maine. Anyway, I cleaned the carb and put in a fresh plug and with a quick shot of starting fluid got it running. After running it for about an hour (on a boat in a lake as opposed to a tank) it seems to run well at all speeds and the forward/neutral/reverse lever operates freely so it seems like a solid deal for somebody with a sailboat or other long transom boat. What do you good folks on this site think I should ask for it ?

What is the model number on the plate on the transom bracket? I don't find a 1986 7.5 model.

Might be an 84. Dad bought the Larson in 84 and traded it for a Celebrity in 86. I forgot that until you posted the above. Sorry for the level of density on my part. The thing is there is a 4hp, a 15hp and I was sure this one was a 7.5. I had to take the 4 and the 15 to a shop to get them running but I got this one going on my own. CRS strikes again.

Found one just like the one I've got , for sale on E-bay. I'll keep an eye on it to see what it sells for.

You might want to bookmark this link and watch it to see what it sells for. It is new old stock and competitive with yours. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BN-1...m14QQhashZitem260306208447QQitemZ260306208447

Wow, that Merc is sweet! The seller says it's a 1978 but looking at it I see that it can be nothing other than a 1975.

I am interested to see what a new 1980ish Johnson 7.5 sells for as well. The fact that it is new, plus it's one of the light 2-strokes means that you should have some interest in it. Yours is a long shaft you say? Somebody looking for a kicker on a larger boat or sailboat would likely be interested. In that case I hope whoever ends up with it ensures that the appropriate prop is used.

I sold a similar Merc 7.5 hp that I restored for $525 CDN (might have been $550) this fall. I wouldn't expect anymore than that for your motor. That's assuming yours is in good running and cosmetic shape. Comparatively, $375-450 is top dollar for a 6 hp and $600-800 for a 9.9 hp of late 1970's early 1980's in good running and cosmetic shape. All prices subject to my area and are Canadian dollars.

it may be unused, but a buyer is still going to look at it as a 25 yo motor. I don't usually deal with motors that new, but 500 that Mr Beaton proposed seems to me to be top dollar. Of course he quoted Canadian.
