My Boat Sank! 10" of snow and high wind!

We had a gale force wind storm here yesterday and 10" of snow overnight... I check the boat yest and all looked well but the swells must have gotten too big overnight for it. Anyway, pulled the engine off (not easy in freezing temp water) and flipped the boat over to empty it out and put the engine back on. and she fired right up after a few pulls! Gotta love old OMC iron! So I took it out for a good run to warm it up and she ran great!

Luckily the powerhead had not gone under. This is a testament to the old style high top engines... A low slung 9.5 or 9.9 would have been half under!

And I rotated it around and will now store it bow to the wind...

I've had boats tied to that dock for around 30 years and it's never happened before!

Luckily a happy ending! Except there's still sand and dirt in my boat!

It's also a testimate to the floatation under the seats.
I'm glad you posted this...gotta go hit my bilge (float switch not working). We had the back side of that storm.

Re: My Boat Sank!

Yes, there was 3 big blocks of styrofoam under the 3 main seats. 2 of the seats I redid this summer (the green ones). The ride was not as cold as one would have thought but probably nothing close to Fla rides! Ever!

We're not ready for the snow yet either as it is a month early so hopefully it will melt soon!

The snow can be kind of beautiful though... But it's still better in January than October!

Man! Makes me cold just looking at it.
A few more inches and the carbs could have been under...

Congrats!! That was good luck!

I'm with TD on that one Steve. I'm in Ottawa and drove to work in it this morning. I couldn't imagine being out on the water in that weather this morning.

Pretty lucky she keep the powerhead out of the water.

Nelson, I'm up in Chelsea on the Gatineau river. I was in town this morning and there was a lot less snow there than here! Snow loves the hills I reckon! (no wonder my wife hates it up here!). and other than chop and wind it was not that bad out... Of course I had 3 jackets on :)

It's beautiful (prefer it in Dec-Feb though) and I suspect it gets worse heading into Chelsea and then up towards Tremblant where it really needs to go :p

I think it was -11 Celsius with the wind chill. A little too cool for my liking in a boat.

Love the pic of the road and snow covered trees. I really do like winter but miss the boating in summer.

Re: My Boat Sank! 10" of snow and wind!

Cool pics Steve!
I'm glad that your trusty 18 made it. It got very cold down here on Mon. and Tues. (about 30 degrees Tues. morning) for October. The ducks were everywhere. I just had to go out Mon. after work and call a few in. When my son and I arrived back at the public launch some nice guy had helped himself to my boat trailer and trailer hitch.
Then, I pulled out my favorite '55 10hp johnson from the living room and took off Tues. morning to do some more "hunting" (season is closed on ducks until Nov. 8th) and didn't have a cotter pin in the prop nut so as you can guess, I paddled back about a mile.:( The '55 10hp ran like a singer sewing machine, though.
I would love to see some weather like that again down here. I love the cold because it brings the birds.
Question: How stable is the "v-hull" style boat you have there? IN turns? I noticed that 18 pushes it pretty fast. Any sliding in curves? DOes it tend to turn over easy if you get to one side? The reason I ask is that I am thinking of getting one similar myself.

That's a scarey sight! Glad it worked out for you, Steve.

Sorry to hear about the stolen trailer and hitch, Jason. I always leave my hitch and tongue locked when I'm at the launch, but its just a deterent. If they want it they'll get it. Most boats up here are V hull. They handle better and are much more stable in rough water because they cut through the water instead of skipping over it. Buy one that has a V hull that flattens out about midship and remains flat to the stern. That gives you the best of both worlds. Deep and wide is best. Too narrow and its tippy. Flat bottom jon's have their place, though. They make better duck hunting vessels as they have less roll and are easier to plane.

I love the 14' aluminum. It goes close to 40 kmh with an 18hp on it. drives great, corners well. Holds 800lbs, of which I have never come close. And I can row it whenever I want also and take the 4 year out for a row as he's not keen on motoring more than idle speed yet :( The only downside is with my 240 lbs in the back I cant keep the front end down at WOT and have to leave a couple of big rocks in it. So it runs better with a passenger in the front.

Speaking of rowing, luckily the 2 oars that were in the boat washed up on shore nearby... Never saw my 2 bailing buckets again though :(

And that sucks about your trailer and hitch... and prop... Hey, you're having a bad week also!

You lucky pup...glad your E-rude stayed afloat. And holy cats on your weather! I was painting the Texas Maid today in shorts and flip flops, but we're due for a Norther...hopefully not from your country though.

Wow Steve, I'd say by making sure you had good floatation under the seats you made your own luck. I think I'd better make sure I have additional floatation in my square stern canoe before I venture out with an outboard on back.

Your boat, is that a Starcraft Super Star 14? If so that old 1960 Evinrude 18 is a great match.

I want to run my old 7? in a barrel before putting it away, but like you, here in Toronto we woke up with snow yesterday. I might get a chance today or tomorrow. One last chance to fog the motor before I tune up the skiis for downhill!

JBJ, my condolences. That sure is galling to hear about your trailer and hitch  A few people out there have no scruples or concience. Dad had his Johnson 25 stolen of his boat in his driveway. I think I know who did it, but now he's in prison for 1st degree murder (the guy has fetal alcohol syndrome - he has no restraints on his behavior)

It is a Starcraft 14'er but I have no idea of the model. I traded it with my wife's friend for a trolling motor and a battery last year :) As it's rated for 20hp it's a great boat to test all my 18 and under engines on :) And it fly's with an 18 on it, does around 38kmh.

I was also running a lot of engines last week in a barrel with stabilizer in the fuel and fogging em and changing the LU oil and then storing em in the back shed.

Hey are you a Maple Leaf AOMCI member? You should be if you deal with a lot of older engines :)

Same thing happened to me once when I tied the bow to shore at a campgrounds. The skiers and speed boats kicked up much more wave
than I thought possible. I know your surprise. Only it was warm temp for me.

Glad you didn't have to test the water temp any more than you did.
The pics look awful cold. The motor is a testament to Evinrude quality.
