Repair or discard a Garmin GPS 12?

I have a Garmin GPS 12 that has been used rarely. The unit was returned by me to Garmin repair before but that was 2 or maybe 3 years ago. Garmin returned a new/refurbished Unit with a different serial number. The unit worked fine until now.

Problem:The unit will now not activate. (new batteries and tested)

Question: Would you invest another $59.00 to have it repaired or buy another unit ?

If it a GPS12Map I would definitely send it to them again. The 12 is a nice handheld, but if used rarely I would wonder if it is worth the bux to have it available. Modern handhelds are much more versatile.

I have a GPS12MAP and would definitely have it repaired if went bad. But that would of course depend on what the repair cost. This unit is many years old and has seen moderate service both in my vehicles and on the water.

It is NOT a Map12. Just an old regular hand held Garmin GPS 12. Cost $150.00 new 6 years ago.

Sent in for repair about 2 years after that for another $50.00. It just stopped working, like this has.

I'm thinking I own a $200.00 paper weight.

I've never dropped the unit or abused it. Maybe I use it too infrequently!!

It'll cost you a little more to replace it with a comparable new one, but it's probably worth it. Most of the advances in GPS the last few years have been in software. You won't get any of those benefits staying with your old unit. I'd dump it.

If you should get it repaired depends a lot on the source of the problem, if it's just a loose USB port or a button issue it can be worth it, if it needs a new motherboard, you will probably be a 70% of replacement cost. This GPS Repair place will diagnose it for around 10 bucks. In any case a devices that was bought for $150 when it was new is hardly worth repairing 3 years later, given the cost of technician labor these days.
