What aditive if any do you run in your outboard? I dont think treating just oil is enough! Im thinking Fireball fuel treatment(not boost)would work. I think I have carbon in a cly causing my 225 not too start. Any thoughts?

Re: Carbon?

seafoam, if you have carbon build up, i would do a decarb, directions in the FAQ section.

Re: Carbon?

Johnson Evinrude Carbon Guard. Or Seafoam that can be purchased at most auto parts stores.
Look in the faqs section for Decarbing an outboard.

Re: Carbon?

Ill do that thanks! I thought that was for storing a boat. Will it loosin carbon up in a motor that is hard to roll over?

Re: Carbon?

That much carbon i would pull the spark plugs and soak the cylinders in Seafoam. Then run it and do the decarb method.
Its hard to think one has enough carbon to make it hard to turn over.

Re: Carbon?

OK! Soaking a cly sounds right. I pulled the injector on the cly that it fires on and found the hole in the head the inj sits in was 75% closed. Tip was 50% covered. would imagine the cly would be the same. Looked like it came out of a diesel. Bad gas or bad oil? Did FAQ search with nada!

Re: Carbon?

LOTS of carbon can actually raise compression, but it rarely makes enough difference to make any engine hard to turn over.

You need to check into your battery, charge it, test it, and clean BOTH ends of both battery cables, as well as the cable linking the starter to the starter relay.

Won't start is often low cranking speed caused by a low battery or dirty cables, if the cleaning and charging the battery didn't work then maybe it is time to look inside your starter, then proceed to checking spark, compression, and fuel.

Re: Carbon?

Thanks! Three guys spent a week total on such things. Even a spare starter. Its not that it cranks slow but has a tight spot. Enough to throw the cps off not letting it start.

Re: Carbon?

You got it! 225 BOMB! Never seen a motor so loaded up with oil. Runs all over my rear deck from the air box when tilted.

i think we need a FICHT expert, i was thinking a carbed motor. i know little about a FICHT.

Re: Carbon?

One of our customer complained about his Ficht airbox leaking oil. Certain years were prone to do that. Bombardier did not want to do anything about it. If you are having carbon problems, check to be sure the engine is coming up to normal operating temps. If you have a stuck thermosat, one side could be running cold and that can contribute to ring/cylinder carbon issues. Once you decarb the engine, consider switching to Bombardier's XD50 oil. It has the carbon guard additive already in the oil.

Re: Carbon?

Thanks! I plan on taking it too the marina today. Im hoping to free it up. Evinrude told me the same thing on stats and oil. From what I can gather on the mess it makes it keeps the air box wet and by this it doesnt dry out.

Re: Carbon?

For all FICHTS:
-Use quality/reliable gas
-Decarb every 100 hrs. at least, I use Evinrude brand decarb while running and spray down the throats and then into each cylinder,
let it sit overnite and then burn it off
-Use ONLY XD50 oil
-Index or clock the recommended Champion plugs
-Use Seafoam at 1oz/gallon of gas
-Don't troll for extended periods, run em like ya stole em whenever posssible

Knock on wood, has worked for me
98 Ficht 150's w/pinned heads upgrade

I will run some Evinrude injector cleaner w/a tank of gas once a summer too

Re: Carbon?

A tight spot in the rotation of the engine is a serious thing that needs attention. Often caused by a partially seized piston. I would NOT be running this WOT without looking into it very carefully.

Pull all the spark plugs and do a compression test. Repost the #'s.

Try to inspect the piston domes, look for any ash, greying, obvious heated area indicating NO carbon, that would be your suspect cylinder.

Re: Carbon?

Sounds like I need to do some de-carbonizing!:DI pulled the plugs out of it and she spun around pretty free. Didnt notice any tight spots. Way to many factors involved in such a problem. We will see what the tri-state service rep says. Its the biggest problem! Finding someone that knows the system. Not too many 225DI mechanics in Ohio and I guess he has the lap top with all the goodys! Tough to work on anything that has elect problems today. We can only eliminate the simpler things. Thanks again!

Re: Carbon?

Talk to the BRP rep as there was a service bulletin on the oil in airbox/cowling issue. A certain year model had incorrect sealed crankcase halves and covered by warranty and a replacement part update on throttle shaft seals to keep them from leaking. Carbon and soot is death to a Ficht. If you have only one cylinder doing this I suspect a bad injector as if a t-stat the entire side would be sooting up.
