Anyone shot both? What's the difference in recoil?

No 9mm vs .40 holy war please. I'm just thinking I will practice a lot and want something I can stand to shoot a lot. 9mm recoil isn't bad at all to me. I don't recall if I've ever shot a .40. I've shot a .45 and I can honestly say I would not want to shoot up a box of those.

There's very little difference between the 9mm & .40.
Personally, I would go with the 9mm because the ammo is cheaper, especially if you do NATO ball by the case.

My preference is the browning over the glock. Just feels better in the hand. Barretta will give you two extra rounds in the clip if those clips are still legal. The high power will allow you to fire a hotter load on the nine which will give you enough stopping power plus for target practice as mentioned you can go with blazers and still stay pretty cheap.

I have a G22, a buddy of mine has a 17 that ive fired a bid.
The 22 is definitely snappyer than the 17.... but it's not as hard as a .45 anybrand.
See if there's a range in your area that rents guns. Shoot both and get the one your more comfortable with.

Re: Glock 19 / Glock 23

I own my second Glock 23 (first one was stolen). I have the latest generation with the tapered frame and under-rail lugs. I really do like the 40 S&W. I am also a 45 shooter and I have to admit the 40 is very pleasant to shoot. The stopping power of the 40 is much better than the 45 and the ballistics can match the 45 or the 9 mm.

The 23 IMO is a perfect size for my big hands and it carries very easy. The 40 just has alot going for it and the law enforcment community here and in the state has moved to that caliber. Brass is plentiful and I do the majority of my reloading.

I have purchased the cheap relaods from cabelas but the quality control on those reloads is poor. Some rounds are right and some feel undercharged.

If you hand to have fun regardless of model .... get the .22 conversion kit later down the road.

My vote is the 40 in the glock.

There is no significant recoil between the 9 and the 40 UNLESS you are shooting heavier 40 bullets.

The strangest part of shooting the glock is the apparent weight change. The loaded magazine gets lighter and lighter with every shot and to me it is noticed at the last few shots.

The only 9mm in my house is a Kel-Tec PF9 which I got for my wife and it is polymer/steel like the glock but tiny...... that is a handfull to shoot with a hotter 9mm.

I can't really tell the diff in recoil from my .380, to my 9mm, to my .40. Now a .45 I notice, but it's still manageable.

Re: Glock 19 / Glock 23

Lately I've been thinking about upgrading my home defense (economic uncertainty). As a last line of defense I was considering a pistol. Though I'd still like to have one, I've decided to take the advice I give other people and go with a Mossberg 500 12ga pump with the 18.5 inch barrel. There are a lot of other important items to address besides weapons. Once I cross those off my list I may supplement with a pistol which will more than likely be the Glock 23. My deciding factors are cost, proficiency and collateral damage. The shotgun is very affordable and I'm very confident with them. With the right load, I won't worry about my neighbors getting hit. It will take some training before I'm comfortable with the handgun as I've never owned one and don't shoot them very often. They are also quite expensive.

I did that 20 years ago except it was a Mossberg 500 410 guage so that the Mrs. might handle it. It is a pistol grip model. The only problem was that I forgot my clever trick to unlock it from it's peg. I had to ask the Mrs and she pointed out where I had hung the key.

Lotta good that would have done if I'd needed it in a hurry.

I've been carrying a 22 as a duty weapon for going on 10 years. Some of our guys carry 23's. Either is no problem to shoot all day when it comes to recoil.

Re: Glock 19 / Glock 23

I have owned several 40 cal over the years. I have had 2 glock 23's, currently have a 27 and have a 22 for work. I also had a Springfield XD40 compact for a while. I would go with the glock 23 but I am impartial to 40 cal. 9mm and 40 are both widley available but 40 is a little more expensive. Both are good guns and the recoil should not be a deciding factor since there is not much difference in these two guns.
