Hard to say with the little information given.
Have you checked the raw water pump impeller in the outdrive? That is the FIRST thing you check with any IO overheat problem.

So does that mean this problem could be somthing simple (retreve it from the repair shop) and attemp to repair it myself, or does this sound like a major problem (a job for the pro's) ? Yes I have read the link !

Sir are you a mechanic?

Do you have any tools?

Is this a 6 cylinder?

Ayuh,.... As Allen says,... Only You can answer than question....

Changing the Impeller is a 20 minute, 1/2 hour deal for Me....
But I've been turning wrenches for over 40 years...
And,...
I've amassed more Tools than most any 2 other Mechanics...
I'd rate the job a 1 or 2 out of 10...

Re: 87 sea ray seville Overheating

First thing you should do is go here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=251571 and download the appropriate manual for your application. At that point, you should read through the manual, specifically, the section regarding changing the impeller. Then decide if it is a task that you are capable of doing yourself. The replacement kit should be fairly inexpensive.

However, if it is an Alpha drive I believe you have to pull the drive in order to replace the impeller - guys correct me if I'm wrong here...

The manual will also provide detailed instructions on how to do this.

You don't need to pull the drive to do the impeller.

in windows explorer (i'm assuming your not on a mac) click tools. it will open a new window, click on the file types tab. Dissassociate .PDF with acrobat. Now when you click on the link it will prompt you to download the file. They are all big files.

As far as special tools... you do not need anything outside of a couple of combination wrenches and a 3/8ths drive ratchet and sockets.... all standard size. But that is just to change the water pump. If you need to actually do some diagnostics then you will need some more tools.... some somepeople may call special.

your mercrusier dealer can get you a real book.

check on ebay. i got the two manuals for my boats from there. though i had to wait for someone to sell the one i needed, but was successful in the end.

maybe have a buddy see if they can load it on their computer, then make a copy of it on a cd..?

You could try changing the thermostat, easy first job.

May fix your problem may not.

But must do this every year if used in salt water anyway.

Could be half stuck closed.

See where the long hose from the transom goes into. thats the t-stat housing.

Four bolts i think 3/8 ths on top pull them.

Pull the top off the housing, see the t-stat in there take it out.

Go to the store and buy a new one show them the old one.

And get the gasket, scrap off the old gasket so the mating surfaces are clean, clean, clean.

New gasket on new t-stat put in the right way cuase you will know how the old one came out, cause you made note of it.

4 bolts back in please don't snap the heads tight, and thats it.

Run the boat see if it overheats, don't need no manual for that.

Good luck let us know how you made out.

Re: 87 sea ray seville Overheating

i suppose it could be a tstat. but from everything i've read, the impeller is the first thing to check in a overheat condition as suggested in post #2 here.
i think the tstat is over rated as a place to look for a overheat. ya can check it if you want to though. after it's out. put it in a pan with a thermometer and cook it. if it's a 160* tstat, it will start to at 160* and will be full open at 180*. a 140* tstat will start to open at 140* and be full open at 160*. putting it in a pan and cooking it to see where it opens will determine if that is your issue. replace if ya want, not to expensive.

if ya've not gone after the impeller to check it out. that really should be done. the alpha1 version of an impeller is always the 1st suspect in a overheat from what i understand...

Re: 87 sea ray seville Overheating

T-stat always the first place to go for overheat in any motor.

First thing i do is check that. Might be a stone in there or something blocking the t-stat from opening. Might be full of stuff. First place to go.

I know guys and i don't agree with them but they run without a t-stat.

In a auto you need it if you want heat in the car.

In a boat you got no heat they say what you need a t-stat for?

I just had a hose explode on me when i changed over the motor the t-stat was broken and clogged the hole.

And stupid me, i didn't check it, 40+ years wrenching and i made that stupid mistake. Cost me 32 dollars for a new hose.

Hope others chip in with there advise.

Since its an 87 i"m guessing its a 470 the thermostat is in the exhaust manifold, Kind of a pain to get too. Try the impeller first, and give the heat exchanger a cleaning.
