Ok, I am prepared to be called stupid, so go ahead?.but, here is the question anyway!

I have a new Mercury 60HP Four Stroke EFI and I want to do the routine maintenance (oil and lube, etc.) myself. I have gone to the Mercury Parts Express web site to look for correct part numbers, specs, etc., and they allow you to ?register? your engine so that lists of parts and products are shown for a particular engine.

I see listed a ?Pump, Crankcase oil? (part 802889Q1 or 90265A5 depending on engine) and I cannot see where this item would be necessary on an ?outboard? engine where both the crankcase drain and filler are exposed. Also, the oil change procedures shown in the manual do not show or talk about the ?pump?.

Am I correct in assuming that the pump would only be required if the boat was ?in the water? and I wanted to do the oil change without tilting the motor ?up?, thus pumping the oil out the dipstick tube?

If there are other issues that require the use of the pump to pull the oil out the dipstick tube, please advise.

Thanks,

?Dipstick? Dave

Dave you would be right in your thinking.
The pump is used for in water oil change. If your boat is on a trailer you will not have a need for the oil change pump.
I'm still firm in my thinking the only Dumb questions are the ones that's not asked Before you make a big $$$$$ mistake.
Have any more Questions please ask.

Stupid is when you think you know it all and repeatedly buy high dollar parts to prove it. Stupid is forever.

Ignorance can be cured by education, which is gotten by asking questions. As you can see, asking questions is not stupid, but really smart.

hope it helps

I tried to visit the Mercury part express mentioned above but was declined admittance. Is there a reason, Tunk, that you are allowed to visit and I am persona non grata?

The link I use is http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com where you should be presented with a page of various items that you can add to your shopping cart. If you click on the right side ?Find Parts for Your Engine? ( Shop for Parts button ) then you will be asked to create a login account. Once you do that then you can ?add(register) your engine? and gain access to lots of nice parts list and exploded parts diagrams.

At what part are you getting rejected? Do you get to the main page Ok? What do you click on just before the declined admittance?

Do you have cookies enabled? They are required for that site. I am using Firefox version 3.0.3, I also tested with IE Version 6 and if your privacy setting in IE 6 is "high" you will never get there. I do not have IE 7 installed on this machine so I can't test with that.
