The longer i visit this site the more i wonder why people don't put up where they are located?

Someone that could help, local to the person with the boat problem might be able to lend a helping hand. Maybe a tool or 2.

Isn't that what all of us are here for?

I for one wouldn't mind going over and helping a guy pull a motor, and helping sort out a problem.

I do it with the Boy Scouts, baseball league, and soccer club.

Being semi-retired helps me keep my finger in sorta speak.

There must be more people around this site wondering the same thing.

Where the poster is, location wise.

Re: Members location

I agree.

I am also a member of a car forum, through that I have met quite a few locals, and we have helped each other out numerous times. Sometimes it is just meeting up and BSing for a while, and other times it is trading spare parts or stopping by to get someones car running.

Re: Members location

Two reasons, identity theft and stalking. Both are common problems with social networking sites and special interest forums. Identity theft through Internet connections is the fastest growing crime in North America, according to the FBI.

Your connection to the Boy Scouts, baseball league, and soccer club are all real life, not digital connections, don't confuse the two.

Not everyone in the Internet is there to help you, and not every friendly person is really a friend. You don't pass out your name and address to strangers on the street, use the same caution here.

I had a well liked neighbor who was in a side line business with another neighbor. He, unknown to us, ran into self made money problems, he skipped out after eight years of trusting behavior, with close to $50,000 of our other neighbors money.

Turns out, he built up a system of trust over years, and then scammed dozens of his friends all at one time.

There are people I would trust here :), but be careful.

Treat people you meet in the Internet, like you would someone you met on the street in New York City. With caution, especially when tools or money is involved.

Re: Members location

i've made friends with one person from here. i'm glad i did. i would say that both of us approached initial contact with caution. neither of us just gave out our address, neither gave out phone numbers that would trace us to a address. we talked back and forth in email and iboats pms for quite awhile prior to contact. turned out we live within a few blocks of ea. other, walking distance even. it's been fun to see ea. others boats and to be able to talk back and forth about boats and different threads that appear here. but i agree, caution is the word. ya never know who's at the other end when communicating in the www. and many do not have good intentions. though i am of the opinion that folks that frequent this board are likely a better roll of the dice than on some other forums. being that this forum is so tightly controlled to be about boats, and boats only... still i would approach anyone i communicate with from the www with much caution. at first.

Re: Members location

you know this is the exact reason, that i boats allows us to call for local rallys, in your area. any member who wishes to organize a get together to meet other members is welcome to. it should be on neutral ground. boat ramp, water front part, a river raft up.

i just did one in Jacksonville, i got to met in person local members that i have been friends with for several years. it was well worth the effort.

i agree you have to be reasonably careful on the web. but not paranoid.

also having where you are, helps many times in giving advice. advice for someone in Canada, can be much different than someone in Florida.

Re: Members location

I have went and helped one of our members and didn't think twice about it.
I know there are a few more in my area and think it would be fun to hang out and talk or work on boats.
With my work i am in crowds of 200,000 people at times so meeting up with one person is no big deal.

Maybe spring will be a good time to put together a local Iboats meet...:D

As both the American Security Professionals and the German versions, have said many times here, good security boarders on paranoia. It is better to practice good security before something happens, than try to recover, after it happens.

Those that are paranoid should avoid the web all together, for the rest of us, just be careful.

I take showers, even though I understand that doing so exposes me to a twenty per cent higher risk of an accident, than if I would take a bath. I also drive 120MPH regularly on the Autobahn. Both of these activities put me at higher risk, as does using any online contact platform, but I still do it.

Like many others here, I have made contacts with people here I would trust, but these were slow in the making, and their and my real identities where released & confirmed in small steps. Even then you are still rolling the dice.

A older “naive” relative who we have been warning for years to be careful online, has just been scammed by a “Christian religious group”, she met through “Christian friends” online, and had contact with for an “eternity” (Internet speak for about “two years”) she said.

It was a “Christian prayer group” the couple ran, and she had cancer. They even met this couple in their local Church when they were “passing through” on vacation. They sold them some “High Dollar” stuff online that they never received, their money is gone, and the couple is too.

As I said before, scamming can, and does happen in the real world also.

Re: Members location

I only meant to put up a general location.

I put my town and state.

But me giving advice to a person local such as store to purchase something, that store my not have a location in some town on the other side of the country.

I'm cautious, not naive i believe.

I met bt doc. in person he lives 15 minutes from me.It is a great pleasure and honor for me to have done so.

He forgot more than i'll ever learn about boats and motors.

Oh well be good, be happy, for we know not what tomorrow will bring.

Re: Members location

My opinion....I almost distrust those that don't put up a location....no, will change that....I do distrust those that don't put up a location.
I have the feeling they have something to hide....
I know it sounds silly, but that just my 1st impression.
The other pet hate is not filling in the 'hobbies' 'job' etc.

I understand the security issue....but we are talking about 'location', which at worst is a suburb, so I do not think that an issue in this discussion.

Pleased you bought the topic up.

Cheers
Phillip

Re: Members location

I certainly think most folks on here are trustworthy and a great bunch of guys that I'd certainly talk boats and drink a few wobbly pops with.

Sure there is the .1% that aren't trustworthy, but its nice to see where others are from. Knowing I'm in Ottawa, you've got me narrowed down to 1 in a million. Not much else you'll get from my profile that would really help.

TDs right in that if you're asking for suggestions where to buy things, outside of Wally Mart, int'l shipping, (read Canadian Duties and Excise tax) kills you. Its easier to comment or offer more info if you understand the locale or backyard the person lives in.

Lots of regulars on here that you chat with throughout the weeks, and I'd gladly buy a pint or two for the marine masterminds and great guys on here if they're ever in town. Most have been very helpful, patience and friendly in doing so.

Re: Members location

I don't mind giving some information about myself. I do not post my email addresses, home address, what school my kid goes to, credit card, bank or social numbers. There is a degree of security when you register to these sites. I have been playing multi-player games on the Internet for almost ten years now. I joined a club or "clan" as they are called and have known some of the same members for about as long. When you actually talk to the members, you get a sense for the phonies. Our administrators don't fool around, they catch you in one lie and your gone. We have had our share, like trying to impersonate gender or age or some thing like that. We play a variety of games like Call of Duty 4 and Battlefield, we like to race too with Grid or Toca racing. We even play Tiger Woods golfing some times. We meet nightly in our voice chat program, Team-speak. Some times there are as many as 25 or 30 of us in there at once. Our members are spread out all over the country and including Canada and the UK. We have arranged meetings on a few occasions and I feel like I have known some of these guys like best friends. Last year I took a couple of guys from Texas out in the boat fishing. Sure many members come and go, but there are a few of us that have been together for almost ten years doing this.I started with combat flight simulation games way back and moved to the ground war games later. This technology is awesome!
I do not like Myspace or Facebook and don't let my daughter go there. There are some of those that are a bit safer like IMVU were they don't allow actual pictures but rather just avatars, and no personal info other than shared interests. This is our website, won't see much without registering, and you have to go through Black's security screening to join. The old members are very open in here, but there is a degree of privacy. My member name is Cloud_GFA

PS. any one can get hacked if they are targeted. There are ways to protect yourself and it's up to you to do it.

If someone wants to hack into iboats to get your user name. Guess what? They all ready have your location (digital trail) so putting you state or city isnt going to hurt anything. I could put my location as being on the moon. Dont mean a thing to hackers. I agree, you do need to be carefull these days. You just need to better protect your self.
