Hello,

This is my first time posting.

I'm having problems with a 1986 Evinrude 28HP outboard my company bought. The motor is constantly flooding and appears pretty unreliable. When I turn the key to initially start it I have to make sure not to press down to activate the choke or the thing will flood. Also, on the few times its worked it will run for like 10 min then within 2 seconds it will rev down and shut off. Then when I try to start it...it floods (leaving my crew stranded for 4 hours). I'm no mechanic but I think it is either the gas pump, electric primer, or the carb is sticking. Any ideas? Also, there is a red lever on the electric primer. Does anybody know which direction that thing is suppose to be? There is no "Manual" or "Run" indicators on the primer so I am clueless.

thanks,
Rich

Re: 86 evinrude 28hp outboard

there is a manual valve on the electronic choke assembly. if its flipped the wrong direction it may flood the engine. 2 stroke gas engines are bad to get dirty carbs or gum up and have all kinds of flooding/running problems.... i would advise to get a carb rebuild kit or kits and clean the carbs. My 48hp Johnson and been setting for a few years and when i put it on my new boat in ran good one trip and then gummed up the next trip. i had to rebuild and clean mine. rebuild kit should cost less than $50 .
