Can I swap drive shafts from an '89 to a '93 Johnson 50 HP?

In trying to complete my powerhead swap from an 89 Johnson 50 HP to my 93, I realized the crankshafts have different splines on them. The 89 is smaller than the 93. I did get the lower unit with the donor motor, can I simply (well its not simple, I've noticed) swap out the drive shaft from the lower unit of the 89 to the 93?

I compared the parts, the only thing the same is the pinion nut. So the threads are the same on the end, doesn't help me much really...

So if I am supposed to be able to put the '89 Powerhead on the '93 motor, and I can't swap driveshafts, how do I do it?

The motor is actually an '88.

It came with a 14 spline crank and drive shaft.

I have a 17 spline crank and shaft.

Who could I call or contact via email that might be able to confirm one way or the other if I can make this work? Can I swap out the drive shafts from the lower units? Can I swap out the cranks? Comparing part numbers isn't going to help because they are obviously not the same parts but that doesn't necessarily mean that key dimensions are not the same.

Right now I'm stuck, I do not want to tear apart my lower unit/gear case just to find out it won't work. Same with the crank.

Any direction would be appreciated...

A guy selling powerheads on eBay says you can swap the driveshafts, they do it all the time.

Now that's one for and one against so I need a deciding vote or two, preferably with some support information.
