Westmar Marine Insurance - Experiences???

Hello Folks:

I now need to insure my new boat (2001 Maxum 2700). The boat dealer suggested Westmar Marine, and their prices are in-line with Progressive and US Marine that I checked via a link on this site. The dealer claims that Westmar has given them great service, but I am sure there is some kick-back based on the dealer's willingness to get the quotes and information.

Any experience with Westmar? Any other companies I should check with?

Thanks

Congrats on the new boat Doc!

I'd recommend shopping out insurance quotes from the insurance carrier you use for your home or cars. I got quotes from Progressive and US Marine, and then took them to my State Farm agent who insures our cars and house, and they came in 50% cheaper with a lower deductible. Package deals and customer loyalty go a long way towards lowering insurance prices. Remember, EVERYTHING is negotiable on insurance.

Good luck!

Couple Progressive Insurance Co's ties (via Millions of $$$ in funding) to liberal groups such as MoveOn.org and efforts to legalize Marijuana with the dismal record they have (as recorded here by iboats users) of paying claims......

I think they would be my LAST choice to insure anything.

I have recommended to all my boating friends to have a personal liability umbrella to go along with the boat policy. You have to carry a larger liability on everything you own, but then you get the umbrella, usually $2 to $4 million extra coverage for $300 to $500 per year. I did this when I purchased wave runners. A family I know through high school kids "had" two wave runners. His son was on one and was following his friend on the other. The kid in front let off the gas, the kid behind him didn't notice and hit him from behind doing about 50mph. The kid who was run over had to have is spleen removed, spent about a month in the hospital and missed a couple of months of school (his senior year). The familys of both kids were pretty good friends. The claim ended up in court and was settled for a little over $1.4 million (in addition to medical bills, the kid who was hit was an athelete and could no longer participate in sports). The umbrella policy saved the house of the owner of the wave runners.

Thanks everyone. I will call my home carrier, we do have an umbrella policy already. I had not thought about that... We have a cash-back policy that can be a bit ominous regarding claims. Basically, we lose so much cash-back that we never have a claim - even if I take a significant loss. I guess it makes sense...

Cheers

I would check with Charter Lakes Insurance. They shopped several companies and offered a great package. Ask for Rob 616-975-0662

Doc..I have my cars/house and boat all with statefarm...they have pretty good prices..and I have a discount cuz it's all bundled together....I also have a mil. dollar umbrella that is only about 25 buckles a yr extra....it keeps someone from sueing the pants off of you even if it's thier fault..and they don't go after your house....kinda good for a cheap policy add on..

check your home policy...
