I have a 1980 pre Alpha, it goes directly into forward no fuss at all, then slides into neutral correctly. When I try to go to reverse all I get is CLICK CLICK CLICK... I stopped the engine, put it in reverse tried to turn the prop and it turns and stops like its supposed to, but is not tight, i can continue turning the prop with pretty low force, when i try the forward position it it locks the prop and will not turn exactly how its supposed to. Does this sound like a shift cable might be out of adjustment or is it worse?!?

Re: Pre Alpha 120 No Reverse

Probably a worn out lower shift cable.
The develop "slop" for lack of a better word, because of wear. Then it doesn't move far enough to get both gears. Typical problem.
On that year boat, it could also be a problem with excess movement in the shift linkage in the drive, another common problem in old boats.

ya might give this a read... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=169865
it explains what's happening when yer shifting. i thought it was a good thread anyways.

on dry land..
when you shift into fwd. your prop should lock ccw. you should not be able to turn it. it will ratchet cw...
when you shift into neu. the prop should freewheel both ways...
when you shift into rev. your prop should lock cw. you should not be able to turn it. it will ratchet ccw...
