Re: weight of motor

cool links, rjezuit

looking at my 1975 25hp- shows 85 # std motor, 95 pounds w/ elec.
Hard to believe it adds 10 pounds

so I guess it's 95 pounds, Joho

Re: weight of motor

Can I take the electric start components off to drop weight? I plan on just using the manual start.

If the motor is working correctly, the manual start is not a problem.

thanks

yes, but only if you ship them to me. :)

You'll be pleasantly surprised what starter and bracket would fetch on eBay....

pm me if you want a cash offer! I would love to put electric on mine.

Re: weight of motor

Does it affect the motor in any way and I would only want to do that if it did take off about 10 lbs.

I am in a 14' jon, its somewhat low profile is why I am going with the smallest weight I can but the fastest engine.

thanks

It will save about 1/2 of the weight. The starter is the heavy part. For 10# I would keep it on. The 14' jon should scream with a 20HP. 10# is nothing in added weight. Leave a cooler home and you have made up that difference. Rick

I'm pretty sure the ring gear bolts on,There may be associated heavy cable and associated wiring and connectors present, solinoid, starter and 2 mount brackets, various bolts.Probably adds up to 10 lbs.

I think these things are a pretty hard pull. I'd leave it on. I couldn't get mine to start in June, and after pulling and pulling I hurt my elbow. It still hurts. I did replace the rope with one the correct length and replaced the starter handle. Easier ... but still hard.

FWIW I have a 14' Jonboat with a johnson 25 and on calm water it runs 35MPH (GPS). Not too shabby for an old motor. Mine's an '85 with electric start. Make sure the boat is properly trimmed- meaning you'll need some weight near the bow. I keep my spare gas tank and anchor up there and it's just right.

Re: weight of motor

Just to throw this out here...

Here's my '69 25 hp. Johnson. The first year for 25 hp. in 22 cubic in.
It's the factory souped up '68 20 hp. 22 cubic in.
I bought it new and weighs 78 lbs. It's the lightest 25 hp. and it scoots!!!
I never wished it had electric start, as it rope starts so easy for me and to keep things simple.

Dont forget the electric choke also. And yes, the ring gear bolts on. You could fetch a fair bit for the all the electric start parts if selling em used...
