The cost of Gel Paint !!!!

I kissed a dock last year and I have a "crack" in the gel coat finish. It isn'ta very big area, so I called agel coat/gel paint company, called SPECTRUM.

I ask for a 2 oz. bottle of Aztec red gel "PAINT" I got a 2 oz. bottle of gel coat "PUTTY".

The cost, was $21.30 for the product, and $11.13 for shipping.

NOT what I wanted, and NOT what I ask for.

SO, I called the company yesterday, to see if they would at least give me a shipping label to pay to get it returned back to them, BECAUSE, they did NOT send what I ask for.

They called back today, and said NO deal on the shipping label.

So, I sent it back out of my own pocket, and it only cost me $2.53 through the USPS.

NOW, I want to find some of the gel P A I N T and I am looking for a suggestion of where to find it at.

(The reason for the paint, -vs- the patch, is my repairman said that it would last longer, and look better in the long run).

I feel lucky, to have found him, as he was on the design team for Cobalt boats, and ask to be laid off, because he is a single parent that was putting in too many hours. He is very good at repairs, as I have seen some of his work.

So, sorry for rambling on, and using you all for my personal venting !!!!!!!!!

P.S. I forgot to mention that the "Gel paint could only be sold in quart quantities, at the staggering price of $95.00/quart" !!!!!!!!!!!!

Should have looked here...21.95 a pint..One step gelcoat with no mold release needed.

you really need to look around locally........gell coat is common..... i live in a small town......there is at least 5 places where a common consumer can buy it........65 a gallon cdn.

the more select places have it for cheaper.....

in canada there is a store called industrial plastics and paint.....(really expencive)....that sells small quantities of gellcoat for 12 bucks......more than enough to do scratch and scuff repairs on an entire boat.

look for some of the boat repair shops......they will be happt to sell you some small amount for cheap........if they dont just give it to you.

I go to my local marina and offer to buy 6-10 OZ ,most times its given to me, ordering direct from the suppler is often double the price of store bought,look on E-BAY.

My repairman, said that he has a line on the paint, he thinks.

You are all right about the qty., and availability etc. I adn't looked around, I just thought at the beginning that, I could get a deal from the factory, (I was hoping for a complimentary sample), but it comes from an outside source, I guess.


Anyhow, I will get some, and get "4 PLAY" back in pristine shape in a few days !!!!!!!!!!

The reason they charged more for shipping is they most likely shipped it as a hazardous material, which it is, you just shipped it as a normal package. Only trained licensed certified people at a company can pack and ship a hazardous material, this cost's more and the shipping company (UPS) charges more for it also. They can't give you labels from their company because they have no idea on how you're going to pack it up for shipping and you're not trained or certified to do it.

As others have said, you can get gel coat many places, some repair kits come with pigments so you can try to match the color, it's not easy to do though. If you want it color matched, Spectrum and a couple of other places can supply you with small amounts, but it will cost you.

Ayuh,... Correct me if I'm wrong..

About the only Difference between Putty,+ Paint is alittle bit of Thinner....

Not that I'd call any Gel-coat,.. Paint.....

That 2oz.s of Putty probably would have made 6oz.s of Resin.... Properly Thinned of course....

Like Bond-o said, the putty and gel coat (what you call paint) are the same thing, the putty has been thickened so it can be applied differently.

The easiest thing to do would just be to order the gel coat again and indicate you want "gel coat" not putty.
