I recently bought a boat that has set for two years. I clean rebuilt carbs. replaced all fuel lines, and fuel tank. Sync timing and carbs. I took the boat out on the water ran like a champ. After about 45mins the engine just died. I tried to restart it, after 5 mins it started but would only reach 2000 rpms under load. if you take it out of gear it will go to 6000 rpms but when you back off to 3500 to 4000 it shuts down. will not idle in gear or out.

I am new to boating also, need help cause there is not alot of boat repair shops around here. I bought a seloc manuel but it doesn't have great detail for this year.

I hope you guys can help, because my son doesn't like paddling back in.....

Thanks JT

the first thing you should have serviced was the water pump. with out cooling the motor is going to burn up. check your compression, and then change the water pump.

compression was the first thing I checked to make sure I didnt buy more than I wanted. Compression was fine, also the water is circulating thru the engine fine. ???

Re: 1983 60 johnson

check your compression now, after the run away motor, you could have blown a head gasket. just because you have a tale tell stream does not mean it is not running hot, it is just an indicator, the impeller is pumping. the thermostat may not be working, it is what cools the motor. the impeller should be changed atleast every 2 years, it sitting up for 2 years, it will be dry and brittle. you have all then classic symptoms of it running hot.

thanks I knew you guys have come across these symptoms and direct me in the right direction. I will change out the impeller, check the thermostate and check the power head temp.

thanks again.

Don't forget the comp. check again if it's still having problems.
