Re: Tax Resolution Services

My only advice to you is this.....
Wipe out your accounts.... your savings, your checking.... your ira's 401ks and retirement SHOULD be safe.
Put your dough in a safe in your house or better yet the house of an extremely trusted family member.
When there is a 10 trillion dollar deficet, the irs is going to look for ways to get money. If you take your money out, there is nothing to seize. The irs isn't going to tell you about it. Your just going to walk into your bank one day and the teller is going to tell you your accounts are siezed by irs court order. And that's that. At least if you have your cash, you won't be in a bind should they decide to sieze. Your bank isn't going to care that you can't make your morgage payment because the irs took all your money.
Even if it is a mistake... and you get it all sorted out, the IRS will take forever getting your money back to you.
If it's not a mistake, and in fact you do owe, If you have your money stashed away then you can make payments on YOUR terms, not theirs.

Gary,

You can also use the "Taxpayer Advocate" for your region. I feel your pain.

Just get on it as fast as possible. That's the best advice I can give.

Best of Luck

Looked into the Advocate.I would have to make 25k a year or less to use them,so i don't qualify.
I went yesterday and took all the money out of savings and left just enough in checking to write out a few checks for bills.

mmmmm, trap door in the floor of the garage with an under ground safe?

My family lawyer is looking for someone to help. I will give him a couple days to see who he finds.

The closest accounting firm with an Enrolled Agent is about an hour from here so that may be worth checking into..

Man,if it was not 30* and windy i could sure use a day on the water to de-stress!! These sleepless nights and anxiety attacks are getting to me..:(

Areyou still with us ?

"Please forward a copy of the file(s) which support your conclusion that $xxxx is past due the IRS. See attached copy of stated amount due."

This is basically what the accountant wrote to the IRS. Maybe there is a special form to do this now. It took about three months to get the paperwork from them. Back then, 1990's, it was $150.00 every time the accountant called them. But they (IRS) like being called. I guess it lets them know you are trying to address the issue. Oh, and when they file the missing forms on your behalf it relieves them of the statute of limitations.

If the other readers have never been under this spotlight it's like taping about 20 nicotine patches all over yourself and then trying to take a snooze.

You will feel some relief by making some sort of contact. They'll keep track of all phone calls. Get on it now so you can get on to a normal tax rteturn next April.

Re: Tax Resolution Services

I have an Consultation with a CPA enrolled agent scheduled.
If he can't help then i'll get a tax attorney.

I have been filing normal 1040 forms for years.
This is a supposed 22 year old debt!

I will be glad to pay a CPA or Attorney a couple thousand to save paying them 22 years of BS penalties.

Sounds like a major bummer, Gary. I like the idea of going to an elected representative because you have to get the upper hand with the IRS. The only way to deal with those morons, is to trump them in terms of position in the argument.

I have never had the specific problem that you are having, but I did have the IRS try to seize some business accounts many years ago. I had been hired to help bring a Chapter 11 company out of bankruptcy, and the IRS thought that the firm had not paid a quarter's worth of payroll taxes (it actually had) for a period a few years before I got there. Long story short, they sent a notice, and then told me over the phone, that they were going to seize our accounts if we didn't immediately pay the original amount, plus penalties and interest. I told them that we were Chapter 11, and as such, they would have to get permission from the United States Bankruptcy Court to do so. The judge involved was a real character who took no **** from anyone, so I told them they were welcome to try! Let's just say that I bummed out a few IRS agents big time, but found them to suddenly become very helpful.

A meeting was set up with a local IRS office, we went over all of the relevant documents, and they finally admitted that they were wrong. We ended up being able to follow through with the reorganization plan, and paid back a bunch of money to a bunch of creditors, including our bank, and everyone (except the IRS) ended up being happy.

I guess the moral to the story is that its sometimes good to have a cranky public official with some clout on your side!

You've got a handle on it. 22 years is kinda ridiculous to say the least. Getting everybody all nerved up and hyper. The politicin mentioned earlier, Dole was it ? That'd be a good idea too.

I don't know how you feel about becoming the subject of a news story, but don't forget the local news action reporters. They love to write stories about government screw-ups.

Thought of that...don't really want to be on the local news..

I did find my old W-2 from that year (1986) I made less gross pay than what they say i owe!

By next week hopefully i will have that CPA working on this.

You have no idea how glad I am to hear you did that.

Not sure, so I'll ask if anyone does know; can they seize personal assets if they choose to?

Yes,they can take all vehicles, real property and even your retirement.
I have a cousin who went through this years ago and they even valued his dog at 100 bucks and was going to take it too!
They even put values on the furniture and appliances in his home.TV,Stereo the whole nine yards!
He filed chapter 13 and liked to never be able to make the huge bankruptcy payments. It was a bad situation for him.

The IRS came to his house and took pictures of everything on his property.

The boat goes into my GF's name this week...Being its age i can do a bill of sale for like 600 bucks..;) My truck is next unless the CPA has a better idea.

Wow! Scary stuff Gary! I wish I could offer you some useful advice, but I can't, so instead I wish you good luck and I hope this doesn't affect other parts of your life too badly.

I guess I could offer you one suggestion, try to take the best care of yourself that you can, both emotionally and physically.

Re: Tax Resolution Services

Thanks guys! I'm at stress level 9 out of 10 at this point! Not sleeping well and its driving me nuts!

On top of this my Employer is wanting me to resign.I had those 2 back operations and am not able to fully do my job.
They look at me as a liability.
They are getting ready to lay off a bunch of people anyway so my head is on the chopping block.
Being my back injury was work related they want to just write me a check, have me resign and them not be liable for any further back issues.
I have another Attorney dealing with this....

It never ends.......

Re: Tax Resolution Services

If your injury is work related, it falls under workers compensation and you are entitled to a partial paycheck if they won't let you come to work. If you have a permanent disability because of the injury, you have a lot more than that coming to you. Don't resign - get yourself down to your attorney and have him/her handle it.

Re: Tax Resolution Services

My Attorney is working with the workers comp people.
My Doc had me on light duty and the company was paying a partial salary and comp was making up the difference.
A few weeks ago my employer told me they had no more light duty work and now Workers Comp is paying me weekly,at a reduced rate.I think the law is they only have to pay you like 80% of your original salary.

I have talked with our Human Resources people at work about training me for another position but they said nothing was available... Hard to believe with 750 employees!

I know they are letting other people go and are cutting way back.
An Investment group from Boston recently bought 51% of the company so we all knew changes were sure to come.

Comp contacted my Attorney last week with a settlement offer but we are holding off.He felt the offer was too low.

So the tax problem and the thought of finding a new job at the worst time in years has got me numb at this point.

So now everyone knows my life story....

I was wondering how the layoffs would be effecting you ... Seems unless you are a Toyota team it is gonna get REAL ugly, at least short term (Toyota teams will just get ugly). Chin up, it will all work out in the end ... last time you were "out of a job", it didn't last long and you came out better in the end ...
