Motor worth getting

I have a chance at a 1976 Evinrude 15hp motor. 15 is the perfect size I have been looking for my boat. I was wondering if it was worth getting. Here are the known problems. Only fires on 1 cylinder, but has good compression. I dont mind at all installing the ignition components so that shouldnt be a problem.

The other problem is that the guy said he ripped the threads out of one of the holes of the flywheel trying to get it off. He said when that happened, he was too scared to mess with it anymore.

I interested him in a trade for my little chrysler 6.6hp motor I have that runs well, I just dont use.

Basically is the stripped out threads a big problem here? or, can that be retapped with a bigger bolt no problem?

thanks

Trade a chrysler 6.6hp for a 1976 Evinrude 15hp, yup, in a heartbeat. I think tashasdaddy misread your post, a flywheel bolt is stripped not the head. Yes, the bolt hole can be drilled and retapped, to a larger size. As for the ignition, shouldn't be a problem fixing.

thanks,i did miss read it. he used the wrong type bolt, it was probably the thread on the bolt he saw, not the flywheel.

PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.

Not that I wouldn't have to trade the Chrysler for it also, but isn't the '76 johnson 15hp the one that F-R said was a finicky one to get running right?

I don't know :confused:as I'd be leary of a '76 15hp if I'm remembering correctly.

take mind the chrysler runs like a champ. sounds like a weed eater, but runs like a champ.

i just dont use it because I have a 14' Jon and my 9.5 Johnson obviously pushes it a little better.

that being said I would make the trade if a 15 is what I was looking for. I already have a 15 I have no use for, but then I have a 20 I have no use for either.

Runs on one cylinder, huh? Try a new set of spark plugs. I don't care if they have only been in there 5 hours, change them. We had a terrible time trying to keep those things running for one weekend on some boats, especially sailboats. They were plug destroying son-of-a-guns. Other people didn't seem to have any problem.

It appears my dislike for them seems to be well known.

If its a nice clean eng ,do the trade. The 74-76 werent true electronic ignition motors.I believe there is a conversion kit available.I think you have a coil problem, you can swap the coils and see if the problem follows the coil,as for the stripped thread,to helicoil, you need to tap larger, try and get a hardened bolt that size and use the larger bolt rather then the helicoil if you can.if the flywheel is stuck good you may pull the coil.Heres a great link to a site a guy put together with tons of info on those motors.change impeller, they go bad just sitting http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson 9.9_15.htm

If I am understanding what is stripped, it is one of the 3 holes that you pull the flywheel with. Right?

If you still can't get the flywheel off, then you need to fix it to pull the flywheel. If he managed to get the flywheel off, then that bolt hole doesn't do much on a regular basis, other than hold the screw holding the little ole inspection plate.

You can drill out the holes and retap in the flywheel. Here's a pic of my 1954 Johnson 25hp flywheel that really gave me problems this summer. I had to retap one to 5/16" and one to 3/8". So now I need 3 different size bolts when I pull it!
