I am thinking of getting a boat with a 1996 Force 120HP engine. I was wondering if I need to check the compression on it before I get it. If so, what should the compression be? Or will I be able to tell if it is good just by trying the boat out? I am relatively new to boat motors. Also, is this a pretty good engine?

Checking comps is always a good idea. Anywhere over 110 is o/k (higher is better!) but more importantly you are looking for very little variation between the cylinders.

Force are a budget motor. If maintained correctly, they will live for many years.

Thanks. Does anyone know the approximate weight of this motor?

Would it be a good idea to check the compression at the dealer before I get the motor?

A 120 HP force motor w/20" lower unit weighs around 300 LBS. I would check compression before buying at the dealer. I wouldn't commit to buying any used engine without checking compression first.
