Tough question. If you buy used and it hasn't already been rebuilt then it will probably break pretty soon. If you buy new then you have to take engine off and remount it onto a kicker plate. I don't know any answers that are both really good and really cheap.

I'm clearing out shop and will be dumping two rebuilt units on Ebay in near future. Maybe get lucky and grab one of them. Otherwise, I don't know any way to get reliable trim for under $500+.

I thought about that but don't know if I want to spend that kind of money on it because the boat is only worth about $1000. I was kinda looking for a used one. If it needs rebuilt that wouldn't be a problem.

Re: power trim and tilt

I have two sets of rebuilt 1960-1994 rams to clear out along with all the various pumps and fittings. The rams are the same for every 3cylinder and larger made before 1995 so I can build a system to fit any motor. I don't rebuild rams anymore because too many people were sending in saltwater gear and expecting freshwater prices. Everyonce in a while I still get some rams though because they come along with pump cores. Watch ebay for a buyer's choice rebuilt system in next month or so. After these two are gone DIY ram rebuild is probably the best option left.

How much do rebuilt systems go for?

Used ones go for anywhere from $120 to $400 depending on condition and time. It's Ebay, so being rebuilt is almost meaningless. A can of spray paint and a good picture can make almost any system look perfect. As such, I would expect a rebuilt system on ebay to sell for $120 to $400.

Re: power trim and tilt

i just listed a rebuilt system on ebay with starting bid of one penny and no reserve. If you have decided against buying a new aftermarket then this is probably the only other way to get a reliable system. I don't think anyone else rebuilds the original Force systems. I only have two sets of rams so first auction is winner's choice (1970-1987 or 1987-1994) and second auction is the leftover.

Re: power trim and tilt

I'm always interested in pump cores. I do not have much interest in rams since I don't like rebuilding them but sometimes in order to get the pump core i have to buy the whole system. It doesn't matter to me whether or not it works since (IMO) they are all on borrowed time & need to be rebuilt anyway. The only thing I care about is that it is a freshwater system with no missing parts and no stripped threads. After that, all chrysler force trim systems look about the same to me. If you think that they are in great shape and will fetch a premium then you should go to Ebay and sell them. I pay same whether broken or running.

theres another on ebay, buy it now for $99 with free shipping. I mean its $100, says its leak free, take it with a grain of salt, worst comes to worst you can get it rebuilt and you've got a tilt/trim for a couple hundred bucks

Re: power trim and tilt

actually, that one looked in decent shape. No signs of Al-Ox around the transom clamp through bolts. It probably bleeds down but is otherwise good. If it doesn't bleed down yet then it should start sometime next week.

Rebuild the valve body to stop bleed down and put new seals on the motor to prevent internal rust. If you co those two things then that system is probably good for another 10 years.

Re: power trim and tilt

IMO - It's kind of dumb not to fix a used system before installing it. The darned thing is already running on borrowed time and it's a pain in the *** to put them on and off boat.

SO .... it looks fine to me. The shaft isn't corroded into the housing, the trim centering ring is still good, the band collar looks okay ... throw another $160 or so into fixing up the pump and it should be good to go for another decade or so.

BUT ... if you're asking if it works now. And if it will work next week? There's no way of knowing. Pump failure is caused by age and brand/type of trim fluid used. Looks are meaningless. The only safe bet is that if it isn't broken now then it soon will be. Just put it on and see how far your luck carries.
