i have a inline six mercruiser alignment tool seems to slide in fairly easy. just wondering can you get most alignment by moving front of engine up or down or do you have to deal with the rear shims which seem like you dam near have to lift engine to put them in. thanks ken

The rear mounts consist of all the parts needed and in the right place. You should not have to shim there. Alignment is done with the front adjustment. If you cannot adjust it solely with the front - then it probably means that the rear mounts need replaced.

With that set up the rear mounts are preset, and not adjustable, you shouldn't ever have to shim those mounts. Adjust the front shims up and down as needed, when you pull the alignment tool out, you should be able to see the groove marks in the grease on the tool compelelty 360 degrees around it.

If you mind marks on the top, extremely visible, and little or no marks on the bottom, then your mounts are too high (picture the angle of the motor in your head, angling the motor up would make the grooves dig into the tool on the top side, and the grooves would barely tough the bottom side.

The rear mounts on Mercruiser drives only get shimmed IF,
1. They are the new style motor mounts, and
2. If you can't lower the front mount low enough to get the alignment bar in.
Other than that, there is no rear mount shimming.

Here are the instructions and a service bulletin about the new mounts.

Ayuh,.....

But you need to put it back together Exactly as the manual states,....

I think it's Jason's handle that says,....
"Just because you Found it that way,.. Don't mean it belongs that way"...

seems to me that that was how it was from factory so i just put it back the same way, from the looks of this engine i dont think anyone has touched it. the shaft went in ok but was just wondering if adjusting the front was the way to perfect it? ps already had boat out since engine installation everything seemed good other than water in outdrive oil. im going to put in new outdrive soon[just wanted to recheck alignment]
