Are the carbs on an outboard really that simple?

I was looking at exploded views of the carbs for my 1996 90hp Johnson V4 crossflow and they looked very simple. Only other carbs I?ve rebuilt were Holleys and Ford Carbs for cars.

If you can do an auto. You can do an outboard. The biggest problem with the carbs are getting them clean. You need to get the passages clean by soaking in a good cleaner. But they are simple. No springs or balls to fly out.

Read that already and a few other posts here so I don?t expect any surprises.

Maybe I?ve just been playing with cars to long.

I hate it when those small parts go bouncing and then you have to spend an hour looking for them.

Other than a good cleaning, setting the float and replacing the orifice plugs its no big deal..Just clean every jet and passage way it has.

You should have no problem with them, compared to a car rochester. I'd pull the jets to check them. Bombardier makes a special jet tool (screwdriver) for their removal. Use an aerosol carb cleaner to make sure all the passages flow. I would probably not remove the round casting disc plugs during cleaning unless you have a flow problem.

From experience the only tip I would give you is to keep the jet with the cover screw so you don't get them mixed up and do once carb at time.

As stated, pay special attention to the passages between the jets, I have cleaned mine multiple times and not gotten it till I ran a copper wire through the passages between jets, but yes the are very simple.
