I just bought a boat that came with a 1954 7.5 H.P. Johnson i think. It won't run but was said to run about a month ago. It now has no spark. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I also need to put a new pull rope on. Is that hard? Not real versed in outboard repair but would like to learn more. Thanks for any help!

Post the model number from the side of the transom bracket. That way we can tell you what year and hp it is for sure.

The coils on those old motors are almost always bad even if they spark or run in a barrel. Take off the recoil starter. On top of the flywheel is an inspection plate. Remove the plate and look at the coils. If they are cracked, discoloured or sweaty looking they are toast. You should also replace the water pump impeller. That motor also uses a pressurized fuel tank that must be in good repair to work.

Go to the FAQ's and read a post titled "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard". Then post back.

Re: 1954? 7.5 H.P Johnson

I read that post and that is a lot of help. Many of those things I am not sure I feel comfortable tinkering with. I am going to first get a manual, try the library here first. I will try to find the coil like you said and see if I can replace it.

Is changing the water pump very hard?
How do you go about fixing a pull rope?

Thanks for the help. I am sure I might need more but I appreciate the starting point. (No pun meant)

Thanks. That is a very helpful how to website. So you think most everything is the same for my motor? This forum has worked great. Thanks so much for your help. I enjoy trying to fix it myself rather that pay someone top dollar.

i would start by checking that the kill switch/button and or its wires are not grounding,if the eng was running a month ago on both cylinders,I would wonder why both cyl lost spark same time, though not impossible for a old motor,
