I'm new to the forum and new to boating but recently picked up a nice '75 Tri-Hull with an Evinrude 70. The motor runs great as I tested it before I bought it and ran it while at home. I finally put it in the water yesterday and it started up on the first try and idled great. I ended up waiting 20 min for my buddy to show and when he did, I put it in reverse, the engine died and from there I couldn't get it to turn over or start. Even with a full charge the starter was facing some major resistance. I have a lot to learn about 2 stokes but one guy said that I had let it idle too long. Is this really a problem, is there a name for it? What is the remedy? Thank you for your help.

has this motor been sitting for a period of time before you bought it? sounds like it either was hot, or you have some electrical corrosion problems. read these...

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Thanks for the reply. The motor hasn't been sitting. The PO used the boat all the time. I will go ahead and check the connections and wires though to make sure. Like I mentioned in my original post, I was told that the issue was caused by me letting my engine idle for a long period and somehow that is bad for the 2-stroke engines.

a motor when properly tuned, and running correctly, will idle for ever, many people troll all day at idle speed.

That's what I assumed. I took your advice and pulled the boat out today, charged up the battery and checked and cleaned all wires and plugs. I started it up and it ran great in both forward and reverse.
