great forum and very helpfull, thats why i am here again... i have a 120 hp Force Outboard Engine on a 16" Bayliner Capri, i bought this boat and ever since i been having problems. the first thing we checked was the engine compresion and it was good. but the engine is not working properly, starting the engine is not very hard, but then it cant stay on iddle speed you need to acelerate to keep it on, and some times the engine starts acelerating like crazy on its own, the thing is that i cant water ski because the engine stops very often, and when the engine is running at high rpm the engine works perfectly it has alot of power, i live in puerto vallarta mexico and i think that we dont have a very good service for force engines, what seems to be the problem?? any ideas how to make it better thank you very much

Re: please help

... hola yee,

assume nothing, treat it like zero had been done to the o/b when you bought it. start with the basics. get new plugs, put in a new fuel pump diaphram. clean out those carbs, run some seafoam(use old spare plugs) and go back to factory carb settings. also check bulb primer and replace if worn. get a new water impeller in there, change the LU oil, put in fresh fuel and proper oil mix(assuming 2-stroke). once you have done this major tune-up see how it behaves.

adios

Re: please help

If the engine runs well at high speed, that indicates it is getting enough fuel and that ignition system is functioning.

Force engines use surface gap spark plugs and these tend to foul easily. They cause a lot of problems.

Replace the plugs with NGK BUH or BUHX or if available Champiuon L20V (new number 322)

After this, see if the idle is set to 750 RPM in forward gear in the water. Too low an idle and the engine will stall constantly.

Lo siento que no tengo las palabras technicas en espanol, pero buena suerte con su Force. --Paco.

Re: please help

thank you very much frank and dont worry about the language i do understand very well, i appreciate alot all the comments and suggestions that you guys make. and iam taking all these to the practice, i had a problem with the impeller and the cooling system(water) because it was stuck but i fix it, recently i changed the impeller and it is working very good, the water comes out very efficiently, now i bought a new gasoline filter and i am changing all the gasoline an water hoses(tomorrow), the fuel pump was recently fixed with a new diaphram.
today my vacations started so i have the goal to fix it and enjoy it on this christmas vacations. hope so..... with your help.
today i started the engine and it took a while to fire up but i think thats normal, once it started, it turn out very easy to turn it on.
the engine never shuts down if you keep it acelerated, but ill go step by step yhe good thing is that it can work. thank you guys and sorry for my spelling.

Re: please help

hi every one here are the new news, we replace the water and gasoline hoses for new ones, change the filter, seafoam the engine and clean the NKG sparkplugs the same kind and model that frank recommended, the engine runs and sound much better, but still stops, so we looking for leaks or something weird and i saw that the little gasoline filter that is inside the engine was running out of gas http://www.gonher.com.mx/images/sitio/productos/fil_web_fuel.gif
that's the filter we installed so we take another fuel tank did the right mix oli +gas and put the tank over the engine and the engine never stopped, so i think is the pump(obvious isnt it??) well still to much white smoke the mixture was 2 liters of gas and 350 mlt of oil (mercury oil). so we are going to buy a new fuel pump any recommendations.... thank you

Re: please help

You are using way too much oil. Proper mixture is 50-1 which would work out to 500 ml per 25 liters gas (25000 ml). So 2 liters of gas only needs about 40 ml oil--not 350. And be certain you are using outboard oil--TCW-3---not auto oil. Multi grade auto oil (like 10 w 30) has harmful compounds in it (harmful to 2 cycle engines)

And you don't need to buy a whole fuel pump. If the engine is before 1990, then you only need a diaphragm and gasket. If it is after 1990 with the square Mercury pump, you need a diaphragm and the two rubber valves inside the pump. Mercury should offer a kit for this pump which includes all the parts you would need.

Idle in neutral --in the water or out of the water on muffs--should be around 1000 RPM. But that is only an approximation. The real test is in the water in gear because different size props change the idle a bit. In the water in forward gear: 700-750 RPM
