I picked up a 1963 3hp. model jw18r, it needs coils, when I took it apart I found that the built in tank is plugged off and it has a fuel pump on it and a fitting for a remote tank. is this factory or did someone add it on? I"m thinking it was added, usually these small motors use a built in tank, don"t they?

Yes a built in tank is normal. That would run a heck of a long time on a 3 gallon.

It was a factory accessory kit.

Re: this is weird

I had the factory fuel pump kit on my Johnny 3, but I also had a valve so that I could use the built-in tank or the remote depending on where I was going. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I think the valve came with the fuel pump kit.

I have a 1960 Sea King 5hp. That drawing looks just like my pump. I found that the repair kit is obsolete and NLA OEM or aftermarket. The pump uses the standard mounting gasket, so any OMC pump that will physically fit will mount up. The number crosses to a 397839 which is still available, and is called for on 6, 8, 9.9, and 15hp models 1992 and older. This is according to www.ishopmarine.com.

Here is a picture of my pump.

If this is your pump, you can probably fix it. You will need to get a Sierra #18-7822 fuel pump kit. You will use two pieces from the kit: the diaphragm and one of the plastic spring caps. If you are careful, you can probably reuse the gasket, but if it is torn, you will have to carefully cut a new one from gasket paper.

Here is a picture of the kit:

In this picture , the diaphragm is shown in the middle. The top right and top left screw holes will need to be trimmed about 1/8" to line up. All the other screw holes will line up. The bottom of the diaphragm will be left hanging out after the pump is assembled. This excess can be trimmed off with a rrazor blade. When you take the pump apart, you will notice that the old diaphragm has a metal button riveted to it for the spring to sit on. This will be replaced with the plastic spring cap from the kit. Just cut the stem off the cap and set the cap on the spring, so the cap will press on the diaphragm instead of the spring.

This is how I did mine and it seems to work just fine.
