Finally painting the boat

2 years ago I stripped it to the hull and rebuilt the boat, last year I replaced the CDI and coils and put a new control box on it so the only thing left to do is paint it.

I work next week then I am off till the first of the year so I have 3 weeks to kill.

As luck would have it my fishing partner owns a body shop and is donating the paint and clear so all I have to do is the work, the only problem is I have to pick from paint he has on hand so I am going with an aluminum silver with green stripe although I was hoping for tan and green.

It will be base/ clear and I have painted probably a dozen cars so aside from this being a boat nothing new.

I will be repainting the motor too but I am in a quandry about whether to peel the big giant sticker on the side of the hood or leave it and paint the rest of the motor.

Port side looks really good but the starboard side is scratched a little.

As you can see the boat is a baby poop yellow now which I have never liked, can't decide if it is original or if a previous owner painted it, it goes from paint to primer to metal and whoever did a very good job so I have a good base to work with, already checked new paint and got no reaction even on the edges so that is good.

Yesterday I pulled the motor and CMC, all the corner castings, peeled all the stickers and filled 27 years worth of holes with JB Weld, there were almost 20 holes in the transom alone.

I had almost forgotten how much fun it is to remove stickers!

I am not gonna worry about dents, I am going for a 20/20 paint job- from 20 feet at 20 MPH it will look nice.

I figure if I pull the tires and fenders and the 2 outside bunks I should be able get to 95% of the hull, don't want to mess with pulling it off the trailer.

Well off I go to fire up the heater in the garage, it is curently 18 degrees and snowing, I do love winter though(NOT).

Some of the guys that paint their motors are able to get new stickers for them. Not sure how to go about getting them or the cost. Or just mask them off and touch them up once the tape comes off.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Ive seen those kits on Ebay but with 3 weeks off I am gonna have to pass, I decided this morning to mask it.

I got most of the hand sanding done today the rest I should be able to get with the DA.

I heard a rumor there was football on today so I will probably watch that the rest of the day.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well off I go, this is the first of my 25 glorious days off.

I am not complaining though, I have a job to go back to and all my bills are paid for now so I consider myself very fortunate, just with ALOT of time to kill.

Start sanding this morning as soon as the shop warms up, its 18 again, I was going to do a super clean but it is a bit chilly for that, just gonna make a huge mess anyhow.

Don't know what paint they used on it originally but it sands beautiful and it is really thick as is the primer so alot of the minor knicks and scratches are coming out without breaking the primer.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Got most of the the port side sanded then started on the motor when I got tired of sanding.

Didn't want to work on the motor laying on the floor so I took a saw horse and bolted the engine to it, works pretty good.

Lots of grease to clean off the motor

Still can't beleive how thick the paint is, I got out almost all of the scratches out without breaking the primer, a couple of deeper dent/scratches that won't come out but that is fine, still in pretty good shape for being 27.

There was one big dent in the top rail that I filled but I am going to let the rest go, afraid bondo will pop out.

Not looking forward to sanding the bottom but maybe a fresh coat of clear will get me a little more top end.

Back at it in the morning.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well just fabulous!

I just remembered I was suppose to have jury duty tommoro so I call the number and I have to actually go, the last 2 times the guy pleaded out or something and I got out of it.

Just watch, I will get into a 3 week murder trial or something.

At least I won't be missing work and they pay you something so it isn't completely bad but still.

Re: Finally painting the boat

I filled all the holes in the top rail and transon and one big dent in the top rail but I used JB Weld and that is all I am gonna do.

The couple dents that are left I will let sit, the ones I can tap I will but most are below the floor and you can't get to them.

Not going for a mueum quality paint job, just want it to look better than it does.

I was gonna watch football the rest of the day but since I have an unknown time in a jury I think I will stay on it.

Re: Finally painting the boat

I managed to get in both, watched the Colts beat Detroit while I sanded.

Got the starboard side done today and got a good jump on the motor, the paint on that was in pretty bad shape, alot of it flaked off as soon as you hit it with the DA.

Peeled the brittlest sticker in the world off the lower just above the cav plate, that was fun.

Get my paint tommoro and pick up some ecthing primer for the motor and the spots I broke through on the boat.

Can't wait to see what Jury doody brings, oddly enough my daughters boyfreinds mom is a bailif so hopefully I get her court and I can just be on my way.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well there you go, not only did I get picked for the jury but it is an actual murder trial, they expect to be done by Wednesday though so its not to bad.

It is actually fairly interesting to see how these things work, apparently I look like a good juror as they didn't even ask me any questions I was just in right out of the gate.

Should be interesting and I still have a ton of time to finish the boat, this is just an unexpected detour.

Re: Finally painting the boat

On lunch from my jury duty, very interesting so far.

Working on the motor cause it is alot cleaner than busting out the DA and I have to be in court at 8:15 so I have that almost stripped so by Thursday I should be able to start on the bottom but I am not looking forward to that.

I'll stop and get some 320 wet dry tonight, motor paint clogs up the dry paper almost right away, did I mention it was 14 degrees this morning so wet sanding should be a hoot.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Sweet Mother! I hope this trial ends today, the last day and a half have been different experts(police/medical) going over the same thing over and over.

The part that scares me is we can't leave the jury room until we come to a unanimous verdict, the baliff told us the last jury was there till 1:45 a.m.

I'm ready to get back to the boat/motor.

I started using an actual paint scraper on the motor and it works really well on most of so I am glad I am stripping it to metal cause the base paint isn't stuck to the motor anymore.

Gonna wait till I actually need it to get etching primer and paint so i'm not tempted to get on that to soon.

Re: Finally painting the boat

We started at 8:15 and broke for lunch at noon for an hour and a half then were in court till almost 9 p.m.

Deliberations took 35 minutes including eating some dinner so yes, the evidence against him was overwhelming and he was found guilty of murder, there were 4 possible verdicts, not guilty, murder, volantary manslaughter, involentary manslaughter, ranging from 40-65 for murder to 6-20 for involentary.

THS CASE, he, defendant was 44, was living with a 74 year old guy in a rundown house with no power, both were unemployed, the old guy seemed to want him out, while the defendant was in jail( domestic violence) he sent a letter to the old guy asking him to file his unemployment for him, the old guy took it to the unemployment office and got it canceled so he (defendant)didn't have any money when he got out, in jail for 3-4 days I believe, then there were several other minor thing the old guy did to annoy him over the course of 2-3 weeks, took a grill away, wouldn't let him use his truck ect..

Def claims the old guy hit him with a chair out of the blue totally unprovoked, where this happened changed numerous times, so they "wrestled" up stairs at some point falling down a flight of stairs, again various versions, they "continued to fight" at the bottom of the stairs. the old guy ended up with 6 compound fratures to his ribs,a broken leg and every bone in his face broken numerous time- defendanis injuries- he had a "bump" where the old guy hit him with a chair.

I slept well last night.

We were done and the state had rested its case when he decided to testify on his own behalf, it was the final nail as he came up with what I believe was the 8-9 version of his story.

In all it was very interesting to see just how the system works, if you are ever chosen I would actually reccomend doing it.

I realize this has nothing to do with boats or motors but it happened while in the middle of a boat project so I though it was relavant.

I am looking forward to getting back ot the boat this morning for more than an hour or 2.

Wholly Smokes! You lucked out with a short trial. I was on one that lasted for 2 weeks, even going in on Saturday to hear testimony from people who "couldn't" make it during the week.

Then,,, one of my co-workers was stuck on a murder trial for over 3 months.

I agree with you, it was very interesting. Especially seeing all the legal wrangling and carp the lawyers come up with

Oh yeah, good luck with the painting :D

Well yes and no, the trial started Monday so it was 3 1/2 days, which is still short, that was just yeasterday that ran till 9 p.m.

When I heard "murder trial" that was the first thing I though of was it was gonna take weeks but as I said it was pretty clear cut right out of the gate.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Got 95% of the motor stripped to metal today, started a couple days ago with sand paper then a razor blade then various paint scrapers and finished today with laquer thinner and steel wool which worked really well.

Once I finish sanding the boat and get a super clean on the garage I will pull the mount off the motor and hang it from a rafter to paint it.

About all that is left is to sand the bottom of the boat which I have been purposely putting off, I will hit that tommoro.

Ice storm suppose to roll in tomight so I am glad I don't have anywhere to go, just hope we don't lose power, they are saying 1/2 to 1'' of ice so it sounds like a good day to stay home.

Re: Finally painting the boat

I hate when the weatherman is right, I actually have a 1/4 to 1/2'' of ice on everything.

Started sanding on the bottom and the bunks were way in the way so I got to looking and it really wasn't that hard to get them off.

Shook the crap out it before I actually took the bunks off, I feel confident even moving it out of the garage to clean like it is.

The bottom itself is in alot better shape than I though it was so I am almost done with that too, it is going to need alot of primer though as the bunks have worn down to bare aluminum over the last how ever many years.

The lower on the motor is off a don't know year and it is gold, that paint is in really good shape and hard to get of so I am leaving that as it is a really good base.

It is nice to be on my own scedule again too.

Re: Finally painting the boat

RIVETS!!!!

I knew there were alot of rivets in the boat but you don't realize exactly how many till you try to sand them, wow.

Took a break and actually counted, just the main line at the water line has 250.
Came up with a neat tool that made it alot easier, I had some thick foam with a sticky back that worked perfectly.

Wasn't into doing much today, my fishing buddy called and ask if I wanted to "run a snow blower" for $25 an hour for a guy he knows, well ya!

So I get there and it turns out the "snow blower" is me and a shovel against 2'' thick ice, all duplexes in a retirement home.

Had to get the sidewalk, between 15 and 30' and 3' in front of the garage doors for the plow, did that for 3 1/2 hours and the guy ended up giving me $120 so not a bad deal at all but I am feeling it today.

Between that and my jury doody I had a decent week considering I am "unemployed", my next 2 weeks off are paid.

Anyhow I will probably start shooting paint Monday or Tuesday depending on how long it takes to clean the garage(which really needs done).
