Re: Finally painting the boat

keep up the god work, careful about open flames (heating garage) when painting, know more than one person that got crispy from running a space heater in the garage when painting in the cold

Re: Finally painting the boat

I have given that alot of thought.

I have a salamander and a kerosene wick heater and I think I will just run the sal for a long time to get it warm enough to paint then open the garage door and clear the fumes then reheat it so the paint sets.

The clear is what I am worried about cause it doesn't like cold even with hot activator but yes, I have thought of that and getting blown up isn't on my Christmas wish list.

Probably do it in sections, I have painted cars in the garage and even with a fan and good cross ventilation it gets really foggy so I will probably do one side then the other then the bottom.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well this morning it is 0 with a wind chill of -23 but the shop is a workable 55.

Done with all the major sanding, got to the front of the bottom and realized that it was way too close to the trailer so I had to block that too.

As I was jacking it up I moved my leg and hit the trigger of the sander, I was wide awake after that.

It is plenty stable to paint but I don't think I will be moving it, I'll have to clean around it now and the back of the trailer looked pretty overloaded so I threw some jackstands under that and I have one at the bow so the trailer is supported well.

So not to bad, 5 1/2 days to strip it of the motor ect and sand it and the motor, if ti hadn't been for my jury doody I would have been done on Thursday but I do still have 2 weeks so no big deal.

You can see in the pics of the bow my super duty keel doubler, 27years of beaching the boat finally wore through it so I fabbed up a peice of 3/16 aluminum and bolted that on, seems to work well and the hull is still dry to boot.

Need to do something with the bottom pain of the door, looks like an alien looking in the window.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Too cold to paint the boat so I got on the motor today, pulled the mount off and hung the motor from a joist and finished removing paint from the spots I couldn't get.

The blue is a reflection from the foam in the window.

Got it primered right before lunch so I can get a sand on it this afternoon and probably paint it tommoro, the etching primer is the nastiest smelling paint there is.

Also hit all the spots I broke through on the boat, suppose to be in the 30 later this week so I should be able to paint it the day after Christmas, too hard to keep the garage warm when it is 1 degree out and the clear doesn't like cold even with hot activator.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Hadn't breathed quite enough fumes today so I went ahead and hit the motor with the first coat of paint.

Get the hood and second coat on the motor in the morning then hit it with a coat of clear when I am done with the boat.

Turned out pretty nice I think, thought I would hit some runs with it being so chilly in the shop but none so far.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well today I got on the hood and decided to pull the front and rear latches off, the rear was really loose anyhow so just as well and it will give me a better paint job not having to tape and work around them.

I was going to pull the bottom seal till I figured out that it is held on with 20 stainless steel staples, that will get taped.

It was really dirty so after some trial and error I came up with using super fine steel wool and some laquer thinner and it came really clean.

Have to get white paint for the bottom part so I decided to do a spray bomb clear on the motor, I am painting the motor with them so it will be the same paint and no chance of a reaction.

Getting the paint and clear for the boat today so I can get on that the day after Christmas.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Got it painted but 2 days of fumes are catching up to me so I am gonna say I am taking tommoro and Christmas off although I may do alittle sanding on the hood with some 2000 grit just to get it really nice before the clear.

Almost forgot the top of the wire harness clamp so I double double checked to make sure I got everytihng which I am sure I did now.

I was originally thinking this would be done by now but I still have quite a ways to go and then I have to put everything back together so I am kinda glad I have the 3 weeks to do it.

Well everyone have a fabulous Christmas and God bless all of you.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well, taking today off worked about like I thought it would.

Got the boat masked off and ready to go which was a millinon times easier than a car, the last car I did took 4 hours to mask, the boat and trailer were 1-1/2.

Got the motor clear coated but had "issues" with the hood and had to repaint it so I will work that in while I am waiting for the boat to dry I geuss.

Got the paint last night, he had a hood painted the same silver I am using and it looked really nice, almost like new aluminum, so I think it will be really sharp with the green.

Well, go do my Christmas eve stuff and get ready to watch my beloved IRISH get beat by the fighting pinapples of Hawaii, who would schedule a game to start at 8 p.m. on Christmas eve??????????

Re: Finally painting the boat

Well there you go.

Getting the base on the boat and decide to open the garage door to air it out then reheat, "hey whats that sound"?

The door comes up and hits where I have the motor hanging so I shut it quick, well now the motor is hanging from the garage door so I run over to grab it so it doesn't drop on the skeg, I catch it but it comes down right on top of the hood to the motor and breaks the corner and scratched a bunch of other parts I had under a blanket.

I am super happy right now.

It is pretty easy to repair but all I had to do was clear the hood and I was done with it and I suppose some how it could have been worse but certainly not the way to start the day, at least I didn't snap the skeg off.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Now that I have had a chance to get my blood pressure down abit I geuss I came out pretty good considering what could have happened, I would rather fix the hood than weld the skeg back on, still sucks though.

Got the boat based, came out pretty good, not nearly good enough if it were a car but nice for the boat.

Painting the bottom was about as fun as I thought it would be, good thing noone will ever see it.

Takeing a break and go see if there are any spots I need to hit then maybe stripe it this afternoon.

The weather here is nuts, 42 Christamas eve day then down to 18 then rain this morning which of coarse put a sheet of ice on everything, they closed the Indiana toll road even.

If I had ice skates I could skate down my road.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Stripes laid out just like I wanted them, came out really nice.

First side took quite a while, I knew what I wanted but getting it to fit the boat was a challenge, second side was a breeze, just alot of measuring.

Mask and shoot the green in the morning and maybe clear tommoro night, suppose to be 56(??????) so I won't have to heat the shop hardly at all.

Re: Finally painting the boat

The weather here is just nuts, last week it was -2, today I am working with the garage door open, 9 a.m. and it is already 55.

Got it mask and the first couple coats of green on, spray a finish coat to get any spots I missed and then peel it for clear this afternoon.

With the tamp so high it is the perfact day to do the clear.

Except for my hood getting jacked up the last couple days have gone really well, very few problems, no fish eyes or reactions and only a few runs that came right out.

First bit this morning I couldn't get the gun set up, it was spraying really bad, then I reaalized I forgot to kick the compressor on, that helped tremendously

Of coarse I haven't gotten to the clear yet, hopefully that doesn't come out to orange peely or too many runs.

Back at it.

Re: Finally painting the boat

DONE!

So this will be my last post, I will post a pic when it is all back together but it is cleared and all the painting is done.

Came out better than I ever expected, I got 3 small runs on one side and the orange peel is really minimal.

Fishing buddy let me use a new HVLP gravity gun and it made all the difference.

It has been an adventure, took way longer than I thought it would but with paint you get out what you put in.

Put up a before and after pic, I much prefer the after, always hated that baby poop color.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Decided I left this post half done.

I have almost everything back on the hull, mounted the CMC and redrilled the transom along with snaps, brackets ect.

I was about to mount the motor when I decided to hit it with the real clear, the spray bomb stuff is almost a matte finish and I didn't like it and I had to clear the freshly repaired hood anyhow so I hit the motor and hood with the good clear.

What a difference, it makes the color really pop and the repair came out perfect.

The hood turned out to be the biggest PITA of the whole project and it is the smallest peice, go figure, that is dust on the decal, needs cleaned up after the clear sets.

Waiting till tommoro to get the bunks back so I am absoloutly sure the clear is hard, I would hate to stick the boat and trailer together.

Fighting the urge to buff the boat, I sanded out my 3 runs and it looks really good but to do the whole boat I'm not sure yet, I will keep fighting.

Re: Finally painting the boat

I am actually done with it now, all I need to do is bolt the bow stop back on and I could go fishing, if it weren't 21 and snowing anyhow.

Getting the motor moved and hung by myself was ruff, about 10-15 more pounds and I don't think I could have gotten it.

Put 2 straps on a joist and alternated lifting till it was to the right height, reconnected the controls and it is ready to go.

Of coarse things were going way too well so as I was test fitting the hood it slipped and hit the boat so I have a small scab to fix eventually.

Kind of funny, when I rebuilt it 2 years ago I only had 2 weeks off and started with a bare hull and had it 95% done when I went back to work so painting it actually took longer than rebuilding the whole boat.

I am really happy with it, came out alot better than I though it would and I killed almost my whole time off.

My wife suggested maybe I could take some time off the boat and get on my honey do list so I think I will work on that the rest of the day.

Re: Finally painting the boat

Had to pull the boat out to work on my truck(rear brakes, UGH!) and finally got a good pic of it done.

Hard to shoot a good one in a 2 stall garage.

Looks very strange still but I really like how it came out although the green is alot darker than I wanted.

The before and after is night and day, wish I had done it a long time ago, now the trailer looks bad so I will probably hit that before spring.
