Looks about right...the flat plate above the prop should be even with the bottom of the boat. Yours looks a little lower than that, but plus or minus an inch is okay. Can't tell if you've got the outboard bolted to the transom, or hanging off the transom with the transom clamp riding on the top center of the transom? Shouldn't be too difficult to fabricate a wooden spacer to raise it a little if you decide it's too low. That's quite a bit of juice for that small boat...if it's indeed a Merc 40 hp.

Looks good...really need a shot right behind the motor down the keel...you're gonna have to stoop down.:)
If it's hair low, you can put a shim under the arms.
Looks like a 14' skiff (?) - that's typical HP rating.
You might want to scare up a sheet of aluminum to wrap the transom with where the engine will mount....street signs work perfect.:D

AV plate looks to be at least an inch below the keel. No shims necessary -- the engine is bolted to the transom but it needs to be raised so the AV plate is at least even with the keel to start with.

I think I am seeing three possible bolt positions on the transom bracket in the last photo. If that is the case, you can just mount the motor one hole higher. I agree with the others that its a little hard to tell exactly where your AV plate is in relation to the keel, but I suspect that the "bump up a notch" will be just about right.

here is a rough diagram, the red line would be a straight edge.

Fine tune the height and prop and that rascal will scoot.

Hey! mthieme! You know that using street signs for that is illegal, don't you? At least tell him to put the printed side in so the locals won't realize what you stole.

Great aluminum, hard and just the right thickness, way better than diamond plate, but it does have a grain. If you ever try to bend it with a brake, be sure to bend across the grain or it will stress crack.

Of course I would never suggest he go down to corner and steal one.;)

That thick aluminum can be tough to bend even in a brake.
I did a thick sheet this summer (about like a street sign) ...it took two of us and a pipe! But it's good having a machinist for a neighbor...with an unwanted supply of SS at that!:)

Someone ought to tell that to the folks around here who have camps on the bayous! Drive your boat down a few of those bayous and you'll think you are on Interstate 10, for all the signs you will see!
