2005 3.0 Mercruiser audio warning question

I am new to this 2005 Bayliner 175, w/3.0 Mercruiser...and I believe that the audio warning buzzer is supposed to sound, with the key in the ON position...before the engine is started. I have disconnected the buzzer, and when connected to a 12v source, screams away.

The electrical schematic shows this buzzer connected to:

1. Water temperature sensor
2. Oil pressure switch
3. Drive unit gear lube monitor

My gear lube reservoir does NOT have any leads coming from it...and the wire harness leads are zip tied nearby, and unused.

I cannot find the water temperature sensor on the engine...where is it located? I can find the temperature sending unit for the gauge.

I cannot find the oil pressure sensor for the warning system...but had no problem locating the sending unit for the gauge.

Any help would be appreciated!

Ayuh,....

It sounds like your boat didn't come with those Options....

The switches should be mounted very near to the senders.....

Wow...that would suck!

I am assuming that the wire harness has the leads, even if unused (like I said, I know where the gear lube leads are). Does this mean that I can 'add' the correct sensors, and have the peace of mind of the audio warning?

Bigger question...why do I have the buzzer under the driver's console? And would it work, if I added just the gear lube sensor?

I still need to know if I just have to purchase the necessary sensors (water temp, oil pressure, gear lube), to enable the audible warning system.

Like I mentioned...the buzzer is installed under the dash, and the gear lube sensor wires are tied off unused at the engine. The unused wire is tan/blue, as called for in the wiring diagram.

Any input would be very welcome...!

Where did you get the wiring diagram? Do you have a factory service manual?
Where does the manual say the oil pressure and temp switches are?

I don't know the 4 cylinders, but for the temp switch first place I'd look is the thermostat housing and the oil pressure switch will be in the block somewhere. I know, not much help......

The oil sender, in on the block starboard side, the temp sender in on the t-stat housing.

And there is a kit you can buy, will come with a buzzer also, my friend also installed a red light on the dash will go on if low oil is detected.

And no it didn't come with it as original equipment, someone installed the buzzer didn't finish the job.

E-bay has the kit, don't know 25 bucks maybe complete with instructions.

I have Don's manual...that is where the wiring diagram came from. The schematic shows the three warning sensors (all tied into the same tan/blue lead), as seperate parts from the gauge sending units. What it doesn't show, is where these warning sensors would be installed....

Tried eBay...but didn't find the kit you mentioned. I used 'mercruiser 3.0' for the search...do you have a better search suggestion?

Didn't get the "6th one down" link...?

There isn't a T on the oil sender.

I am leaning to the buzzer being added...the crimped connectors do not look as professional, or match, the Bayliner factory wiring.

According to the electrical schematic, I can use the one tan/blue female connector that is on the engine, to tie all three sensors into the 'system'. If I could figure out how to insert just the one PDF page into these posts...I could illustrate how simple this SHOULD be!

He don't have no gear lube bottle in the bilge, though.

Part 2 looks to be the sensor for the temperature that I would need. I plan to call these folks tomorrow, for more info.

I found this on the Bayliner site:

All carbureted models (optional on the 3.0L) feature the Audio Warning System, which uses an under-helm mounted warning horn that alerts the operator to potentially engine-damaging conditions, such as low oil pressure, high engine temperature, low drive lube level (sterndrives), or excessive transmission temperature (inboards). The Mercury-exclusive Engine Guardian? system takes marine engine protection to new levels by not only detecting and alerting the operator about these conditions, but also by processing the data and automatically reducing power to a safe operating level. In addition, Engine Guardian monitors cooling water pressure, providing an early warning to the 555 controller of the potential for high engine temperatures. Any incident that activates the system is logged by the controller and is accessible by a Mercury MerCruiser technician for diagnostic troubleshooting.

If all the above is true, then a lot more is needed than just the sensors. To do what the systems claims, there has to be some sort of computer module! Although..I would be satisfied with a simple audio warning....

Then all I might need to do, is figure out the right parts numbers to make this work. It might even be possible to do just one of the sensors (temperature would be my first choice), to see if I am wasting my time.

The dual sensor is like 200 bucks alone, now you see why the guy before you never hooked it up, and that boat could go 20 years with out it.

My 2.5 and now 3.0 140 hp, don't have no alarm system.

Boats like cars are getting more complicated.

We put a T on the oil sender with a switch we bought at pep boys.

Same with the temp switch, and bought a buzzer at radio shack.

Also at radio shack we bought the little red light, so it went on also if a low oil condition presented itself, or over heat condition developed.

In my own, inexpert, opinion you don't need it.

You can thank the original cheap owner of the boat for not ordering that option.

Ayuh,...

Actually Quite Easy...

You need to "T" off the Oil Pressure port,+ add an oil pressure Switch,...

There should be an unused port in the T-Stat Housing for the Temp Switch you need to add,..

You'll probably have to change the outdrive Lube bottle to 1 that Has the switch in it,...

Then daisy-chain them all together, back to the wire you've already found...

That's going to be the plan, chief and bondo!

The gear lube bottle replacement isn't going to happen...I'll be happy with the temp and pressure monitored. Maybe if I hit the Lotto....

But, then again...if I do hit the Lotto, I'll be living on my boat...somewhere down in the South Pacific...and it wouldn't be a Bayliner 175!
