It?s called two boats running on auto pilot without watches on duty. We get 2-3 accidents like that a year around here.

I'll have to stick with the right of way rule: The smaller boat was to the right and had the right of way. Who has time to pick-up a camera and start recording, couldn't you manuver out of the way in the same amount of time? Unless the bigger boat was not moving I think it's under fault. But clearly they're both idiots for not paying attention.

It's unacceptable not have a watch on duty when running under auto pilot. On the other hand its unacceptable to drink and drive but how many people die as a result of drunk driving a year?

Re: Another video: who has the right of way?

hard to say. but i think the boat the camera is on may not be under power... theres a guy on the pulpit and he catches on to the impending contact. but not by much. i don't see much movement on the camera vessel like it was under power either.... i'd think it'd pitch more if it was in motion... the larger vessel also don't seem to take action to avoid collision..... could very well be the smaller vessel is on autopilot. as it certainly takes no action to avoid collision either. and it's is certainly under power... if the larger vessel is not under power. that'd make the smaller one at fault. i can't see how the camera vessel could do much to avoid it if it truly is at rest. i don't think he'd be able to power up in time to avoid the smaller vessel...

if both boats are under power... obviously the camera boat is most at fault as he is the give way vessel........... unless its not under power....

you watch things like this but its amazing that no one died from this. The bow of the larger boat barely missed some kid. I really dont know much on the subject but i say the smaller boat is at fault because the larger boat was barely moving if at all. you can watch the grass in the water and if he was moving it was less than 5mph.

auto pilot in a boat?...................and th wife wants to know why i dont want to go on a cruise!

if someone was on watch what does that entail?.......does he have to get someone to change the course of the boat or can the watcher do it themselves?.........either way you go --to me--if i had a boat of that size i would want someone at the helm at all times.........NO AUTO PILOT........im mean your paying someone to stand around and watch so why not pay someone to drive?

Without a doubt the smaller boat was at fault! the larger was barely moving, as anyone can see the ocean floor from the larger boat. and can see he is barely moving, clearly the smaller ship ran into the other.. hope no one was injured!

Wrong........ It's not he who moves faster has the right of way. It appears both boats were under power and the smaller boat has the right of way.

Re: Another video: who has the right of way?

in the marine world there is no such thing as right of way. there is a stand on boat and a give way boat. In this case the smaller boat was the stand on boat. It has nothing to do with bigger or smaller in this case. btw coast guard regulations state even if you are the stand on boat you are required to avoid collision. I think the situation here was no look out on either boat or someone would have turned.

The vessel on the operator's port (left) is the give-way vessel. The vessel on the operator's starboard (right) is the stand-on vessel.

that sounds backwards to me...

both boats in motion...
from 0-112.5*. your the give way vessel.
everywhere else your the stand on vessel... including when not under power...

so if a boats off your starboard beam anywhere from 0-112.5*. you change take action to avoid collison... everywhere else. 112.5*-360*. your stand on vessel and take no action other than maintain corse and speed...

also in a collision condition. there are no rules. your requied to take any action nessesary to avoid collision. i also believe that both partys will be held to some repsponsibiltie... though, in this perticualar case. if the camrea boat is not under power. i don't see how they'd be liable... but that's the way i understand it.... feel free to correct me... i didn't go look at a book for the facts...

I agree with the statment of in the end you need to avoid the collision. regardless of who does have the right of way a crash is a crash.

that is a rule..... you take any action necessary to avoid collision. including breaking the rules.....
