Year of Manufacture?

Hi all, the 25' sailboat I just bought came to me with two well running outboards, a Johnson Sailmaster extra longshaft 7.5 Sea Horse #J8 SRL CNR Serial # E5593693, and an Evinrude 9.9 longshaft serial/ model # E10RLEDD/ G04030112. The seller could not tell me the years these motors were built, I'd like to know that. Are the years identifiable by these numbers?

As well, I'd like to know if (aside from the HP) if one would be preferred to keep over the other with regard to overall maintenence issues.

I don't need two outboards. Both run well, the 9.9 Evinrude seems to be in overall better maintained condition, but the Johnson 7.5 seems to be lighter, which is good too. If anyone has a chance to answer, I'd like to hear from you. Thank you, Cap

Re: Year of Manufacture?

welcome to iboats!

your 9.9 is a '96 and your 7.5 is a '82

got the info here

as far as which one is better thats a personal preference..........speed you want , how light do you want, fuel economy, age of each..........lots of factors to consider.

Re: Year of Manufacture?

Speaking from a sailors point of view. I would keep the 9.9. I have had a 9.9 and an 8 on my 24'er in the past and the 9.9 was better for getting you out of trouble when you needed it. Do you have a full keel or a swing keel? What's the total displacement? My 24'er was 3500lbs or so... A heavy boat. My current 22'er with a swing keel is only 2300 lbs and has a 5hp.

Also, the 9.9 can be upgraded with an electric start (not too had) and a charging circuit (harder) if need be. I don't believe the 7.5 can be (but I could be wrong there).

Re: Year of Manufacture?

Thank you for the replies.... A big help.

The boat is a 1983 Hunter 25, I'm thinking I'll like the 9.9 better too.

It appears as though the 9.9 has no alternator/ battery charging system....and it does look like the 7.5 Johnson does have an alternator battery charger while it is running. Is this correct?

That may be why there was a solar charger on board when I bought the boat in November with the 9.9 Evinrude on the transom. The 7.5 Sailmaster was an extra OB. Am I correct on this? TY, Cappie

Nice boat :)

Really, the 7.5 has a charger in it... Hmmm... That might sway me a tad... It depends on your electrical usage... Do you have a lot of electronics onboard?

Re: Year of Manufacture?

Samo, ty for the reply. Yes, the 82' 7.5 Johnson has a charger. I generally prefer to use no electronics, nor do I need lights.

I am a simple day sailor/ 3 day a week club racer...I like to keep the boat light in weight. KISS I don't even care to have, maintain or worry about a battery. Candlepower or battery operated LED running lights will work for me onboard in case I'm caught out after dusk..

The 9.9 Evinrude has no charging.......but it will give me speed if I need to run from a T storm <grin> and it is so much newer. I haven't weighed each of them yet, I would like the lighter Sailmaster OB on the transom, but I don't think there is much difference. I am so nuts about extra weight when I race that I remove all the cushions and leave them at the dock for the day.

I've just sold my Hunter 27 Cherub this past October....Yanmar diesel....and moved down in size to this Hunter 25 Cherub. I'm sure it will be faster and handle better than the 27. OB power is new to me. I want to keep one OB and sell the other. Likely I'll sell the 7.5 Sailmaster after the help I've rec'd here. ???? Thanks! Cap
