My buzzer would make a tone every time I turned the key on and then it stop all of a sudden. I tried to ground the tan wire coming out of the heat sensor and it didnt do anything. I have a 1986 70hp evinrude.

Re: cooling buzzer

Did you have the key on when you tested it? If so you may have a bad horn. But check it first and be sure there is 12V going to it with the key on. If you have 12V there, ground the other side with a jumper wire. If the horn is good it will blow.

Re: cooling buzzer

I tried another horn and it didn't work when I turned the key on. I used to beep just to let you know it worked. The other horn didn't work til I grounded the tan wire.

Re: cooling buzzer

If you disconnected the single bullet connector in the tan wire to test the horn and you grounded the wire from the sensor, you grounded the wrong wire. You need to ground the other end of the tan wire (the one from the horn. The overheat sensor is just a switch. If the tan wire was disconnected that part of the ciruit had nothing connected to it. If you did NOT disconnect the connector in the tan wire, then you very likely have a bad horn. It is an electrical item and Yes -- they can work one minute and not the next. Light bulbs burn out and so do horns.

I just took a aligator clip and clipped it to the wire while it was still conected and the other end to a bolt.

Re: cooling buzzer

I have tried a different horn and when I connect it I can then ground the tan wire and it will go off. But when I turn the key on it doesn't give that little chirp.

The "tell tale" horns are different. Follow Silvertips directions-exactly.
