best way that I have found to service trailer is to put my boat in the water...
but it is a tri-hull so you could just un-hook it and hit the brakes on your tow vehicle real hard see what happens just remember to send pics.

Re: Need ideas on how to get my boat of the trailer

Casper, i have done it serveral different ways. i have just pushed them off in the grass, then winched them back on. or the correct way.

Getting Boat Off Trailer

you don't need stands.

1/you can lower the tongue to the ground. i would get some 6x6 or old railroad crossties cut the +- 12 inches, now block up the transom. 2/

Raise the tongue of the trailer the back of trailer will drop away from trailer. this is the tricky part. between the cross braces of the trailer block the keel lower trailer, boat will be suspended on the blocks.

3/ pull forward, lift bow again, and reblock i a different place. repeat until trailer is out from under the boat.

4/ to reload, just reverse the procedure.

if you were just working on the bunks, or painting the bottom. you could just do the first 2 steps.

There's lots of threads here with in depth discussion on the subject do a search.
In the blue field above select search, advanced search, in titles, then select a couple key words like (trailer repair) better keyword you choose the better the results.

Re: Need ideas on how to get my boat of the trailer

what i did to get my 16 foot aluminum off the trailer seemed to work for me but it very likely might not work for you. me and my brother decided to redo our trailer when we redid our new boat and had to get the boat of the trailer in a shop because it is icy outside here in minnesota. we slid the boat off the trailer and the transom onto 3 old tires. i had 6 tires around so i set the boat on 4 of them to keep it off the concrete and then rolled the boat over with tires constantly under the boat. it rolled nicely and the tires had some give so did not hurt the boat. i set the boat upside down on the tires and it works well keeping the boat off the ground so it doesnt rust and i can get my hands under the boat to lift it easier! :)

I use 2 automotive engine hoists. One in front and one in the rear, with straps hooked to the bow and transom eyes. After I roll the trailer out from under the boat, I block the boat. Reverse procedure to put boat back on trailer. My 15' tri hull is on blocks now while I'm working on the trailer.

I've got a 20' Center Console that weighs in at about 2700#.

Will the bow eye and the stern eyes take that kind of weight on an engine hoist lifting using them?

thanks

weekend before last we lifted an 8000 lb 28' twin i/o by the bow eye with a strap and a tractor... rear was on stands and we lifted to 45 degrees to get trailer under far enough

I once lifted a 15 footer with a couple chain hoists attached to a big tree branch. It was easy and quick.
After moving the trailer I just set the hull on the grass and blocked the aft corners so it wouldn't rock.
Reversed the process to re-load!

I would rather jack, block, and roll myself.

What ever method you use, remember not to put yourself under a suspended load - at anytime even for a few seconds. I have removed a few boats off trailers, small boats roll off onto tires easily but jacking, blocking and rolling out the trailer is the safest.

For a larger boat there is no way i would trust the bow eye or the transom hooks..
The block method is the safest IMO...;)

I was thinking of making something like this except using an engine hoist at one end instead of the tower and winch...

See the chain between the two sides of the beam hoist? There should be one between those hull stands, too, from side to side. Bow-to-stern chains wouldn't hurt but are not necessary.

Casper, not sure if you got your boat off yet if not this is what I posted in another tread hope it helps.

Ken, I started by lowering the trailer jack and placed the jack stand under the transom with 2x4 on top. Then when you raise the trailer jack the transom will sit on top and back of boat should be off the trailer mine was pertty heavy so once I had it on the stands I used a bottle jack on the center of the transom to lift higher and ajusted the stands a little higher. Then I used two floor jacks with a piece of carpet wrapped around a 2x4 you have to alternate jacks to work by the crossmembers and axle. The trailer rolls real easy so make sure you do not ram it into your floor jack when pulling out the trailer. Go slow and be careful on the cribbing I layed a piece on carpet on top also goood luck.....

That would be definitely the preferred way to go to fully support your boat to get it off a defunct trailer. Fully supported and carefully work the trailer out from below the hull.

I use a set of old tires, as blocks. slide the boat off the trailer a little, put 2 tires under the rear, push the boat back some more, and then put 2 more under the front. just winch it back onto the trailer when your all done.

here are some pics, I am in the process of doing the same thing.

Any construction going on around you where you might get some 14" - 18" pvc drain pipe?
I snagged a few pieces a year or so ago when doing a trailer rebuild. I used a sawzall and cut a v to match the bow and a lesser v to match the stern. They did a great job of holding the little boat up and off the ground. By the way, I used Tashasdaddys method to get the tubes under the boat. Works like a charm!
