hi, i went ahead and bought the 1981 merc 50 after listening to the great advice on here,

PROBLEM

the quicksilver controler that came with does not have the wiring connected, i have just a loom with 8 wires sticking out, i have listed these below and what i assume are the purpose, could someone please check and also advise what the missing ones are :

1) RED = 12vdc permanent live +
2) BLACK = 12vdc Neg -
3) YELLOW / red = through neutral switch to key
4) YELLOW / black = ?????
5) BLACK / yellow = cut out - short to earth to kill engine
6) PURPLE = choke - supply 12vdc + to operate choke solenoid
7) BROWN = ?????
8) GRAY = ?????

There is also a female socket on the controller that has the brown, gray and purple wires doubled up sticking out by about 1/2 inch that go no where.

I have looked in my book , but do not seem to have any diagrams showing the controller.

Thanks in advance

Neal

Re: quicksilver control wiring

Neil, Yellow/red is probably the starter solenoid power. Turn the ign key to start and see if it gets +12V. Grey is likely tach. I would think the external female socket is for powering the tach and gauges. It should therefore have purple, grey and black wires on it.

See if the yellow/black wire is connected to the choke button (or push key to choke). Brown might be overheat wire, which you cannot use with your motor.

Re: quicksilver control wiring

Neil,

yel/red is the crank wire, goes to the starter's solinoid.

yel/blk is the choke

blk/yel is the kill switch. Your safety lanyard in the throttle grounds this wire inside the throttle if the lanyard is pulled out, thereby shutting down your switchbox and your engine. It connects to your switchbox, Look for another blk/yel wire on the switchbox and connect to the same terminal. The other blk/yel wire should go to a tilt switch, which prevents your motor from running if it is trimmed out to much.

pur. is +12 when the key is in the on position. It is used to power up a low oil warning system on oil injected engines.

brn. is for the overheat alarm in your throttle. It connects to a temperature switch on the back of the engine by the spark plugs. Brn was also used for a trim gauge and since you state there is a brown wire in the female connector, this may be the case.

gry. is for a tachometer, It connects to your rectifier along with one of the yellow wires coming from the stator. I would not connect this wire unless you plan on useing a tach.

As for the female socket, yes, that is for gauges on the dash board. But, like Chris said above, there should also be a black wire in there.
