Can we have one of our experts give us a Step by Step instruction on how to Repaint my Bayliner 18ft Capri Cuddy.

I can follow instruction very well. I just need it written out and maybe it will help someone else.

I have looked at several DVD/Videos and have a general idea but,,,,,,,experence is the best teacher I have found on iboats!

I think Bond-o was just kidding. There are plenty of threads addressing this topic, and a little searching goes a long ways. Gemme a sec and I'll post some links

TM,

Everyone has their own idea of what works best. Much of that is by experience.

Personally, when I did my first one I went to the websites by Pettit and Interlux. I read everything they had to offer. They are truly the experts. They have guides you can download and/or order.

The next thing you need to do is decide whether, or not, you can actually spray the paint on. Most folks do not have that capability. I don't.

I have always used the "roll/tip" method. You cannot tell it from a spray job if you do it right.

Personally, I use the "one part" epoxies from either Pettit or Interlux. They are relatively easy to work with, shine beautifully and hold up well.

With that, let me run down a quick step by step.

1. Sand the boat with 220 grit "wet" sandpaper. "Wet" sanding washes away the sanding grit and makes the surface smoother. Go easy here, you DO NOT want to sand through the gel-coat.

2. Wipe down the entire area to be painted with the appropriate thinner used for the type of paint you are going to use. Stay brand loyal here also.

3. Tape off the areas that you don't want paint to go on. Don't scrimp here. Get good tape and plenty of it.

4. Apply the appropriate primer for the type of top coat paint you decide on. Again-stick with the same brands here. Pettit to Pettit, Interlux to Interlux, etc.

5. Wet sand the primer VERY lightly with 320.

6. Apply your topcoat using the roll/tip method. Go slow and easy and fight the urge to put on too much paint at one time. These paints WILL sag and it dries hard. Read, difficult to sand out.

7. Wet sand with 320 between coats. Two coats should be more than adequate for your boat.

Roll/tip method. This is hard to describe but actually quite simple. It works much easier with two people.

1. Roll on the paint with the appropriate knap roller the paint maker recommends. The roller will leave bubbles.

2. With a VERY high quality brush (you do not want brush bristles in your job), gently stroke out the bubbles and clean up the areas where the roller ended.

These paints will typically "flow out" very nicely (hence the warning on sags).

It's a lot of work and time consuming but you will amaze yourself as to how good it will look.

Re: How To Repaint My 89 Bayliner Step By Step NEEDED! Please Help!

I just finished painting mine with interlux brightside.. I scuffed the gelcoat with 120grit, put 3 coats of primer on sanded between coats with 120 and then 220 on the last coat of primer. Sprayed the color coats, sanded with 400 between all coats. Final coat looks great. I sprayed instead of roll and tip, but have never used that method but most people on this forum say its a bit easier. Less hassle I guess without having to clean the gun. Always wipe down between coats with acetone right before you spray to get any oil from your hands off the boat. If I was to do it again, I would go with a two part like interlux perfection, or awlgrip.. The one part stuff is no where as durable. A bit more money for the two part, but probably well worth it. I am anxious to see how long this paint job will last. Hopefully a while if I keep up with it. Hope it helps. attached pic of how it turned out

I'm going through this too and although I'm not ready to paint I am getting prepaired for the day.

So far, the best help I've found is from the folks at Interlux. They have videos and a full guide that explains everything about applying and caring for all of their products. They are also very responsive to emails and phone calls so if you get stuck, they are right there to help. They gave me an near item by item list of what I would need for my boat and gave me options for different types of uses. I'm sold and I know I can apply it and get a great job.

As a side note, everyone here will tell you that the key is in the prep work. Beleive them, they are 110% correct.

Hey Guys,,,,DJ, Bond O,

Thanks for your input. It really means alott to me. I have seen the Intrelux Video and was amazed at how well it looked.

Just as I wanted, I now have met someone who has used this product.

I like the Roll/Tip method. I'm doing this project in my garage with very little room.

I will be posting pics on this project as it comes along.:D

My tip for the day, newbie painters alot of times sand WAY to much, all you need to do is scuff the surface till the original surface finish is gone, you don't need to go 1/8 deep, all you need is something for the new paint to adhere to.

AND, the actual painting is really the least of the job, getting it ready to paint is where almost all your time will be.

I am painting my boat now and I probably have 20-30 hours into sanding and other prep and another 10-15 hours into stripping my motor to metal, I am going with base/clear on mine.(Thread-Finally painting boat)

Just take your time and it will be fine but painting is a learning process so don't expect a museum quality job your first one.

Absolutely agree ! The process is a lot differerent for Tinny's but on Glass you are right on! You do have to be warry of the osmosis blisters and get them dug out and filled but don't over do it or you will be adding a lot more work to the job.

Fist level prep is to clean with a good dewaxer, sand with the grit that the paint manufacturer recommends and then dewax it again.
The paint manufacturer will tell you if you need to prime or not. If you do, make sure you have ample time to let the primer dry and get that first coat of paint on it as soon as possible after dry time has been met. If you don't the primer will eventually become paint and it's adhesion enhacing properties will subside. In other words, it will have done you no good to prime. Check with the manufacturer to find out what the maximum open time is for the primer if they recommend using one.

As I said before, everyone will tell you that prep is the most important but I'll add that planning is just as important.

I do have another question,,,,,,,,,,Whats the best why to remove Stripes and Decals that were placed on your boat from the factory. I kind of like the clean look.

Thanks for all your input.:D

wd40 is, imho, a miracle product.......but in this case it leaves an oily residue that even aceitone will have a hard time getting off totally.....the residue must be totally cleaned off before you paint

Re: How To Repaint My 89 Bayliner Step By Step NEEDED! Please Help!

O.K. Well, here goes. I've been wanting to pull the Decals off my MonArk so after reading this thread and posting to it with a big yeah for the heat gun acetone method, (I have used this before) I decided to try a few others.

First: WD-40 and a putty knife; It works but it is slow.

Second: WD-40 and a single edge razor blade in a window scraper holder; Works better but not great.

Third: Bosch LED Heat Gun set to 300 Degrees and the razor blade scraper; Bingo - Decals peal right off but they leave a lot of the glue behind.

Glue removal: Tried Acetone, Lacquer Thinner, Goof Off, WD-40, Surface Prep, 87 Octane Unleaded (Union 76) and finally Berry's Chemtool.

Hands down winner.....drum roll please... Berry's Chemtool. It's still not a simple wipe on/wipe off but it is the fastest and it didn't bother the paint. Most ceartainly it would if you let it soak so just put it on a rag and rub and rub and rub and rub until it's all gone.

As a bonus, I got all the GluVit off my hands from this mornings Transom Board replacement job.

On a serious note - all of the products I used are highly toxic. If you decide to use them you need to wear proper gear. Read the labels and heed the warnings.

-- Late addition: Berry's also takes off carpet glue better than anything I've ever tried!

Kragen Auto Parts. It's a carb cleaner that your supposed to add to your fuel. I've been using it as a brake parts cleaner mostly until now. It's Berry's Chemtool #12. Be careful this stuff is nasty..

Tymers,

The other suggestions are good ones on removing stripes, etc.

3M also makes a decal/stripe remover made specifically for that job. Any body shop supply house will have it.

I've used it on cars/boats and it very effective. Easy on paint and any other surface underneath.
