I have never done this before, but my dad is replacing his ignition coils because they motor was performing inconsistent. We discovered the coils to be dry and all cracked.

we just got the new ones in and they come with the coil, and then just a cylinder metal piece.

How do you operate these things.

Im assuming you use the existing wires? I have never really worked on Merc motors and just by glancing at the coils, I was stumped on how to install new ones.

thanks

I don't quite understand what the cyl. your describing is but it should be as simple as removing the plug wire from the coils and installing in the new coils then removing the 2 wires from the switch box the 3 screws that retain the coil and reinstall.

do the plug wires just shove into the holes on the coils? thats my main question...what holds them in there and how do they get contact?

thanks

Yes. they just push in and pull out there should be a metal clip on the end of the wire to help make contact.

Re: 1988 Merc 25 Ignition coil replacement

I was searching the forums for exactly this same reason. I purchased replacement ignition coils for an 100 HP 1988 Merc OB. I noticed that the new ignition coil kits contained the "metal cylinder" and wanted to know what purpose it served. I thought that it looked like it could be used to adapt the coil for a smaller diameter spark plug wire.

Joho5, does it end up being an "extra" part?

thx -Dane

I just found my answer at the bottom of this thread.

It is a bushing, but on the Merc it's an extra part.
