Hi Gang,

Been working on my fishing deck for the bow of my boat.

Today I installed carpet on the front triangle section of the deck. For my first time carpeting it went fairly well. I had some trouble dealing with corners. The next piece is much more complex. I have the two hatch holes, and the hatch doors to cover. I hope someone has advice how to cut the carpet for a clean finish on hatch cover corners, and the hatch holes themselves. I cannot have much extra carpet in these area's due to space provided to close hatch doors. I searched for threads and didn't find much... Also didn't have much luck in google land either.

I attached a pic of the front finished part, and the next complicated piece w/o hatch doors shown.

Thanks so much in advance for the guidance!

Lay out the carpet over the deck, pull it tight and staple it in a few places around the perimiter, I'm figuring your attaching carpet on the underside? Use monel staples or stainless steel. Keep going around pulling tight as you staple, finish up with corners with a triangle fold. Same with the hatch openings, you may have to make one small relief cut @ 45* from each corner.

im sorry.....im not really certain of rhe question....

if you are just asking how to cut out the hatch holes and are worried about making them look good from the top side....

i used tape on the edge of the hatch.....then put chalk line chalk on the tape.....and layed the peice over it....(carpet in this case).....wnen you lift the carpet.....there is a perfect chalk outline of where to cut......

a pro would use a metal trim around the edges of the hatch and opening.

Make the cuts like this?

See pic. Red = carpet, White = the hatch cover. White lines in red = 45* cuts.

yes like that but the cuts are to made in the excess carpet thats going to be folded under, don't make the relief cuts all the way to the corner either, leave about 1/2" or else you'll have bare wood showing in the corner, it's hard to explain but you relly have to pull hard and it helps to have someone else tack it down while your pulling, then you can get them corners nice and sharp. I used to help my mom with furniture upholstery as kid and sometimes my dad would have to pull the corners while mom tacked.

Re: Help needed with carpet install please.

I need to make sure I know how to cut the carpet on the corners, so when I wrap the carpet around the back, glue and staple, I don't have 3 layers of material bound together, making the 1/4" of space that remains for each hatch not sufficient enough...

Yea that could pose a problem, you mignt have to just forget about folding it behind and just tack the face, those staples hide pretty well.

The cut should be short the thickness (+ a little) of the wood or whatever you are covering.

You have to account for the carpet thickness when you make your hatch covers. You can always make them smaller.

Re: Help needed with carpet install please.

Some progress.

I finished the hatch door's. So much for the carpet only adding 1/8" to each side of the door. Looks like I'll be removing some material from the deck openings before I install the carpet. Door's now barely fit. I installed the pull ring handles for the halibut... Not bad for the first time...

I've attached pics that show basically how I cut the carpet, before I stapled it to the back-side of each hatch door. I left a little extra material and stapled each corner so the seam would stay down.
