Well after alot of reading and reading and reading some more, I painted my boat today! I sanded and sanded and sanded somemore and finally I was ready to breath some life into this old beauty . This a '69 Arrow Glass I got with a 35HP '59 Johnson Super Seahorse and a Valley tilt trailer for $40 bux . Originally I just wanted some of the instruments of this boat but for $40 bux yeah, I took it home:D ! The floor is solid and the hull is in perfect shape. I used Rustoleum Gloss Sail Blue in the quart can and rolled and tipped it with some high density foam rollers and used the smaller foam brushes for the tight spots. I used about 5% paint thinner to thin it just a little. Rustoleum is good at self leveling and tip out all the airbubbles it cures very even (looks sprayed ! )

I was a little sceptical and unsure what to expect but I think the results speak for them selves. This is just one coat . I will only do one more thin coat and clean up the rub rail or just tape everything up a bit and spray them white or whatever color I decide on. I was truely amazed at the results! Anyone thinking about trying rustoleum I give it a big thumbs up here! Of all my reading on marine paints and auto paints and everything I came to this one conclusion from another thread . You can get great results from a cheap 20-50 dollar paint job if you sand well , prep well, and apply well. Or you can spend alot more dough doing it done the right way , there is no middle ground, so I figured why spend more .... I am not a hoyty toyty collector ,just your average joe and this really exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to put the windshield and all the flawless chrome tack back on , she is gonna really sing then ! Best part , I did it myself!

next task is to color match the trailer.... can you believe the before and after ?

24 hours and I will give a second coat. You can see in one of the splash well photos the coverage is thin . This was a tricky spot and I think a second coat will make for even color throughout. after that gonna crank up the heat to about 90 degrees and let it cure for a few weeks and buff it till it looks like glass! The gloss looks really nice though, I wasn't expecting as much . Noy sure if I am gonna wet sand or not between coats. I have heard people going both routes and seen pix good in both ways with the end result . Prolly just end up doing the second coat and if all looks pleasing that will be that . Now just gotta hunt down some blue vinyl to recover my seat to match .

That came out really nice. I painted some iron outdoor furniture with rustolium many years ago. Just thinned with a little turps and sprayed it on. It lasted many years sitting outside 24/7 all year long. I would expect you to get many years out of that paint job, especially if its covered when not in use.

A really good example of how nice a boat can look without breaking the bank.

Don't forget the photos after its all assembled!!!

Looks good. I also used the Rustoleum marine paint on my boat. I couldn't believe how well it turned out. It seems really durable as well. Good job.

Thanks, I owe it all to my director , iBoats.com Forums! couldn't have done it without all the people who have posted here. So much very useful information!
I will post some pix when I install everything back and now I am just working towards getting the seahorse back in the saddle again.

I would say don't paint the rubrail if that is what you are suggesting. Just clean it up or replace it, they are cheap.

That looks really good! My wife want's to paint our CC but I keep telling her that simple gelcoat we have now is easier to maintain than paint is. But seriously, That looks good. Makes me curious.

everyone thought i was crazy, when i started painting boats with Rustoleum. i have done many, with great results. thanks for proving me right. it seems like everyone that tries it are happy. i just did this little Gheenoe, use the Hammered Copper Rustoleum, one coat. looks like it has metal flake in it.

Yep, nice job. Roll-n-tip sounds dicey until you actually do it. I wound up painting my old rub rail on the Texas Maid because I couldn't find an adequate replacement/insert. Now the fun of refitting her begins.

Hey TD, gotta love that hammered metal finish!

But I have one question..... How many 110v appliances do you use in your canoe?

Re: Painted my boat today~

I plan to do the hull of my small whler roll and tip. I'm reaching the outer boundaries of my budget now and am interested in the rustoleum.

What are your opinions on using this to paint the hull? The boat will be trailered and likely stay in the water no more then 12 hours at a time.

I'm curious as to why the topside designation? Is topside merely not anti-fouling or is there something more to it?

I plan to use an epoxy based primer as I did on my deck and interior, any ideas if I would have trouble with covering it with the rustoleum. I'm excited for answers, I thought I wasn't going to be able to get my boat painted the way I wanted without $500 in gel or awlgrip.

All anti-fouling paint has copper in it , that why alge and scum dont like it !!

as far as painting her , you seen TD pics , he did his a few years ago and it still looks great !! John

Re: Painted my boat today~

From what I've read I think that as long as it is trailered and not moored extensively it should be fine if you don't mind touching it up every few years. Here's a tip too . If you wash it semi annually with a sloution of 4 gallons water to 1 gallon or equivilant of ultra bleach and one cap full of clothes detergent and use a pump sprayer or low pressure pressure washer (use the chemical injector inline or you can use one that connects to the end of your gun) let the solution sit for 15 mins after saturating the boat then rinse, this will get the white very clean. Kinda like washing a house. Mildew ,algae , and stains dissolve quickly with this solution and it isn't so aggresive to the paint.

Also as mentioned proof is in the pudding!

I think I might not be able to locate replacement rub rails. I will just paint them white, tape everything up and spray away! I was thinking about doing the hull in a gloss white but I think the flat white really makes the blue pop! And it is considerably less work ,time I'd rather spend with my motor!

If anyone is contemplating whether or not to roll and tip rustoleum especially for budget reasons I say GO FOR IT! Odds are you won't be dissapointed . On the flip side if you butcher it you aren't really out that much cash and some prep time. That was my motivation!

TM I am polishing the chrome now ! Also trying to think up something for the rail "stomp pads" . They were rubber and have beautiful chrome plates around them . The old rubber is cracked and I am trying to think of something to replace them with. Might just putty in all the cracks with silicone and paint . Also was at Northern Tool last weekend and saw some black rubber "diamond plate" that got the wheels turning....hmmm
