I just inherited my Dad's 1959 10 HP Evinrude which has not been run since 1975. I took it into a dealer and they wanted over $400 to get it into running shape. The motor looks like it is in mint condition with basically not dirt, grease or grime on it. I remember it as a kid being a pretty good and fast motor. I want to use it but dont want to spend that kind of money on it thinking I can do the work myself. What all do you think I should do to it to get it running? Any thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

do you know the difference between a screw driver and a wrench? get the Evinrude service manual. and do it your self. first you need to check compression, and spark. it is probably going to need coils, points, condenser, plug wires, carb kit, and water pump service. these parts will run $200-250. actually with labor $400 was not a bad price.

These are great little motors good for about 21 mph on a stock light fast boat.
Read waking a sleeping outboard under engine frequently asked questions.
If you are mechanically inclined you can probably do it.If you have ever changed spark plugs, changed oil or rebuilt a carburator you will be ok.
Get a service manual. You may find an after market manual at the library. Most have a motor theory section at the beginning. Most routine parts are available right here at iboats or NAPA auto parts. If the coils haven't been replaced they will need it.This requires flywheel removal. We can guide you as you get into things.Don't be afraid to ask.

Good Evenin' and welcome to the great outdoor/indoor sport of working on an outboard!

Nothing to this little engine really. I you have done a little work on any lawnmower engine (tuning, maintenance, etc.) you can do this as this one is very simple and light.

Manual, coils, impeller, sparkplugs. Go from there.
Enjoy!!

This motor is very easy to work on. I would not waist my money taking it to a shop. You can do everything that needs to be done to tune up the motor yourself. I got a 1957 7.5 hp motor about a year and a half ago and with no experiance whatsoever in working on outboard motors, or any kind of motor for that matter, I was able to replace several of the components of my motor and get it in great working condition.

You need a service manual, parts manual, and this forum.

An owner's manual helps too.

Also, I would recommend the book "Cheap Outboards." I recently got the book and read the whole thing in less than a week (which is a pretty good accomplishment for me lol). I think that the book would be very helpful to introduce someone who knows nothing about outboard motors to how they work.

Good Luck!

I have one of those also. Most important thing before spending any $$$ is to take the compression reading in both cylinders. If it is low then its not worth putting any $$$ into it. Usually it is good though. Then as I am cheap, I usually only replace the coils and wire wheel the plugs and then test it and if it wont run then give it a carb kit. And you want to make sure it's pumping water out the back also, if it's not strong, give her an impeller.

$400 doesn't sound to bad to me either. Of course, I wouldn't pay it.

Its been sitting since 1975. It needs a new impeller. For the price of $20 and a half hour of your time why would you risk using an impeller that is sure to have taken a set or become hard and brittle after sitting 34 years.

Get a manual. It will help a lot.

Dang Wayne,
34 years of sitting still doing nothing would damage the impeller? How??
Do you really know what you're talkin' about?;)

.....I'll put 20 bucks on the impeller coming out with only 1 and 1/2 fins left on it!!! My '54 big twin either had none or 2, I can't remember which.

Isn't that the golden jubilee motor with the square hood? There's a nice looking one on nymarine.ca in the customer motors section.
Honestly, if they rebuild the lower unit with new seals, replace the ignition, rebuild the carb. and replace the fuel hoses, and replace the w.pump impeller,
$400 bucks is a great price if it includes parts. I would do it myself, though, because it's a fun motor to work on. However, you should be very careful because once you learn how to do it, the old OMC virus could make you very sick. You could get a rash of old motors popping up in your garage. If you catch it, be sure to intercept all parts boxes and delivery trucks before the wife sees 'em!
Got pics????????:)

Hey... that's a good point! Thing should be as good as new... almost!

But Jason, it's a '59, WAY newer than your old battleaxe '54 big twin! So it's bound to be in better shape!

Re: 1959 10 HP Evinrude

Thanks for all the great input guys! Tasha, is a screwdriver that long skinny thing with a plastic handle and a wrench the dohicky with the nice eye on one end for hanging it up on the pegboard?

I do have the original manual that came with it. Amazing it has printed on the front 20 cents per copy!

Will look into the repair manual for sure.

I dont have a compression tester but will see if I can borrow one from someone before going much farther.

Thanks again all. I will let you know if I move forward.
