My 1992 175 evinrude engine fuel filter had some black gunk down in the point of the cone screen. I cleaned it out completely and replaced it only to find it again after the next trip to the lake. Could this be my fuel line deteriating or just too much oil in the gas.I was not mixing oil in my gas but too much oil had been added during break in period and some still may have been present although unlikely. I am replacing the fuel line from the tank to the engine but what about the smaller lines on the fuel system...VRO and such ? Should I install an inline filter or water seperator also ? And could that gunk in the cone filter have caused my carbs to starve out and blow my engine. The bottom two pistons on the starboard side bit the dust.

carb blockage could very well have cause the problem. change all the hoses to the alcohol resistant fuel lines, the ethanol eats away at the interior of the fuel lines. if you have a built in fuel tank, a fuel/water separator is a necessity.

I can remember once that my engine was not running too well and I had my fishing partner reach back and squeeze the bulb a few times. The motor perked up and ran better so I went and installed a new proper bulb hoping that my bulb was my problem. No better performance though. It is then that I checked my filter and found the gunk in it. I now feel that when my partner had pumped the bulb that actually the gas was being forced through the clog and temporarily gave better performance.
