Yamaha speedometer

I ran over some branches and seem to have plugged up the small pin sized hole on the lower unit. I can't seem to clean it out using a piece of small wire and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I'm assuming this metal tube goes in a ways and then curves up before attaching to the flexible line that eventually leads to the speedo.

i clean mine out with a small drill bit. i use vise grips to hold the bit and use it like a cork screw.

I use a torch tip cleaner its flexible and has graduating sizes, and I blow compressed air down the tube at engine connection low psi.

I'll try that also, for the left over debris, once I get the hard stuff out with cousinabe's drill bit. I thought I was going out in the bay among the mangroves today, to where the water is calm and shallow to work on it and also do some test runs, but the weather doesn't look too inviting, so I may contilnue with another issue while it's on the lift.

Just be carefull when using that drill bit. The size bit you have to use to fit in the hole is really small and it's very easy to break it off inside the hole with even the slightest wiggle. Of course I am speaking from experience here.

I'll be extra careful and will be using the smallest bit possible I have it clamped down with my mini vise grips, on the boat and ready to go. Just waiting for the right opportunity to get out in the shallows

the speedo pitot tube is replacable on that motor, its not on most parts book pages but there is a tech bulliten on it.
with vice grips odds are high your going to snap that bit off.
last one brought to me with a snapped bit I finnaly had to melt out with an oxy/acetyne rig.
took me about 2 hours.
dont snap the bit.
I also use torch tip cleaners, its a very tiny set of twist drills with a pin vise.
while yes the tube is replaceable it doesnt come out easily.
best to carefully clean the debris from it, not that I have ever broke off a bit in one :)
the other engine, luckily cheap bits were used and it rusted itself out in a few weeks .

I'll be extremely careful. So, now for the weather to warm up, so I can get out in the shallows.

Re: Yamaha speedometer

OK...all fixed, :D using the small bit and mini vise grips. Just pulled in a cove with about a foot of water and tied off on a mangrove branch for a place to work. That stuff was really imbedded in there for more than 1/2 an inch. Also it seems that as long as you keep it straight, there shouldn't be much danger in breaking off the bit inside.
Thanks to all conributers.
