I am interested in buying a 28' contessa bayliner. It is on stands, so i am not sure how the hull is. It looks good, but never know. He is selling it for $2000.00. What do you think? He seems like a nice guy, and he would be moving it to the marina where i want it.

If it is too good to be true it probably is. That could be a great deal or it could be a very bad deal, it all depends on the condition of the boat.

Yep I agree , it could really good and it could really bad , your going to have to get aboard and check it all out , transom stringers and the deck !! then the motor or motors are another thing , check the compresion on them and if there with in 15% of each other then you should be good to go ,

But i would have to say for 2,000 she going to need a lot of work !! go check her out !! John

lingarner.......welcome to i boats.....

we can help you here with any or all of the needs with this or any other boat you wish.....

the price is so attractive, you must move on the boat "right now" we dont have the time to educate you on all the things you need to know.......(however hang here with us and you will know everything boats)

unless you are really good and totally knowlageable.......(as qualified as a marine surveyor), i would hire a marine surveyor tonight.....i mean like right now.....to get the boat checked out.....it will be the best 200 bux you ever spent.

the boat can be as worth as much as 25,000 or it can cost you to haul it to the dump and cut it up!........no joke there.....

but.....its a big risk if you dont know what you are looking for.......sure its gonna need repairs at that price.........but one simple repair like a transom or a motor can cost around 5 grand with a 28 footer........now.....what happens if it needs 3 of those "little" type repairs.

cheers

Re: Interested in buying boat

To me, for $2000.00, I could care less if the motors ran. I think, if the hull doesnt sink, it will be worth it. I will be doing all the work myself, so there will be no contractor cost. Also, I am looking at it as a hobby. I am expecting 3 to 5 years work. To me, that looks fun. I just dont want to buy it, set it in the water, and it sinks.

no hull is worth 2k if everything else is trash...

but i dont make as much money as some so maybe my views are diferent. i do all my work myself as well.

the floors being solid is the biggest thing start there then move to the next thing.

how long has the boat been listed? if a while its probally cause its a pos and knowone wants it....

Re: Interested in buying boat

well bud you have the right attitude...! :)

but 28's are uasually twins.......thats big bux if the motor and drives are gone....(water in the oil means they are gone)....

but read my earlier post......if you are afraid of loosing the 200 for the survey.......then dont do it cause the boat will cost you a hull lot more.......heck you can go thru 200 bux worth of aceitone on one job !

but at this price.....if you snooze you will loose

Re: Interested in buying boat

You are saying, call a marina, have their boat tech. go out and check it for $200. He says yes, its good, or no, hell no dont buy? That sounds really simple.

yup.

espically if you dont mind some of the repair kinda things and already have plans for spending some big (to me and im sure others) money what is a simple 200-300 bux.

tell him you want his honest opinion no holds barred. he says buy it then buy it, he says pass then pass on it.

its what he does for a living he knows whats a good deal or a bad deal.

Re: Interested in buying boat

Thats the best advice i have gotten. But how do you tell if a hull is good if its not in the water?

Re: Interested in buying boat

1st. all i know from your post is " it is a 28' contessa bayliner, for $2,000" that ain't much to go on. year, drive train, condition of hull and engine.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Re: Interested in buying boat

the surveyor cannot say "dont buy" it
but he can give you a very clear picture.

actually........when the boat is in the water.....its harder to check out !

there are many many things we check to see if a boat is worth buying.....

on a 28 it would be a little harder as there are a lot of things under the deck we wont be able to see.......however........rotten stringers. deck and transom are really easy if you know how, and where to look........if possible we will ask to see a core sample.......(a core sample is a sure way of finding rot)

however on a 28 there are a lot of different systems.....including....somtimes a galley.....that means a propane stove......or a head with a shower......those systems can cause you a huge amount of headaches if there is a leak some where..........heck....if you have a stove leak and the sniffer doesnt work....its a time bomb.

Re: Interested in buying boat

also......the surveyor cannot distinguish between a good hull or a bad one as far as effiency....ie.....donzi hull over a bayliner hull.

he can only tell you if somthing is wrong with the hull as far as in correct working order

Re: Interested in buying boat

1st- I want somewhere to go spend weekends, parked at a marina slip, and I can restore. I have restored my house for years, and sort of finished. I have to stay busy.

2nd- Usually, i will be by myself. and then sometimes my wife wil be with me helping. i have a daughter that i get everyother weekend. but i doubt i will take her much during the restore process.

3rd- inboard

4th- I am planning on this to be a 3-5 year process of restoration. I am willing to pay what it takes. To a certain amount. i know that leaves it open.

I am not too concerned about doing alot of traveling at this time. I have never owned a boat at all. I just jump into things largely. Not to mention, this is my weekend getaway.

these two things can get you into a world of hurt.

first....with boats, you must know how much before you start.......because seperately the parts are huge expencive.

for example.....some idiot :D in the restoration section is extending the hull of his boat.....totally re-powering it and adding a bazillion things....it will cost over 25k...........the boat is 40 years old.

does that make any sence......no......none........except he loves the boat and walked into it eyes wide open............. so to him....... its a labor of love to get him what he wants.

in your case.....with (most likely twin's) 25k for a repower would be a starting point........then theres the rest of the system's......

dont get me wrong....im not discourageing you in any way.....heck....if i saw the add within 200 miles of me....id allready be there checking it over with money in hand. and i suggest you make arrangements to see it asap !

second......boats just cost money.....and lots of it.......the more time and talent you have....the less they cost.....but not much......
but jumping right in is not somthing you do with a 28 footer......15 footer....ok.......28.....not a snowballs chance. thats why the marine survey.it will open your eyes so you know exactally what you are getting in to.

and btw........marine motors arent car motors.......so you cant just "drop in" any ol 350 chevy motor.

cheers bud.

Re: Interested in buying boat

ok, you have really broke it down for me. What do I look at now? I have looked at sailboats, but i have never sailed. BUT, i thought i could have bought a sailboat and just used the trolling motor to go out a few yards and anchor. SO what do you think?

Re: Interested in buying boat

i really cant advise you on a blow boat, as im mot framilliar with them as much.

but i would really look at the 29 footer asap.

if the motor drives are good.....and SOME of the other systems.......you have the correct attitude to do this all the way......and this is a fantastic forum....anything you want to do to the boat......any thing........we can walk you right thru it.

i suggest you re-read tashasdddys post and ask your self some hard questions....how are you going to use the boat? .do you want to pull a tube?....waterski?....fishing?..if you own a boat are you happy tied up at a dock for the weekend when your friends are out on the water? (after its restored)

really.....we can walk you right thru any thing you want to do

(hint... be very careful taking advice from oops! he's not quite right in the head ya know....) :p

Ditto on the survey. As long as it does not have major rot, you've got a hull you can work with. Still gonna be a lot to re-power etc. but you would have a good starting point. See what the survey says. Even post it here for opinions etc.

Just understand you are in for a long process. 3 years sounds about right before it even sees water.
