Steering upgrade from a cable pulley system with no steering tube on motor

I have an old (late 50's to early 60's) 16' aluminum vhull with a 1966 or so Chrysler 50hp outboard. I am converting the boat to a bass boat and I have stripped it completely down. I have also removed the old cable pully steering which I plan to replace with a newer style steering mechanism.

I am specifically considering the Teleflex SSC151 rack series (NFB - no feedback). I need to know if I am on the right idea or should I consider something else.... There is no tilt tube on the engine, there are only solid bolts at the tilt, so I will need to attach directly to the front of the motor. I need to know where to buy the attachment hardware if this is the right setup. I also need to know where I would buy the transom or splash\side wall mounting brackets that hold the fixed part of the cable in place. I would also appreciate any feedback on the specific steering unit that would be recommended. The link below shows a picture of what I am talking about.

One other thing. If this is the correct kit to get.... I have seen a complete kit for the Teleflex NFB Rack with steering wheel and as it says all hardware (with pics of the motor mount and transom mount see link below) for $199 on a site called TMS (Tenkiller Marine Supply). They are based in Oklahoma and are probably a small re-seller. However, this appears to be a pretty good deal for this kit. Does anyone know if IBOAT matchs deals like this? Does anyone know anything about TMS?

i have done what you are doing several times, i really suggest teleflex rotary system, with the motor you have you do it need NFB, but if you troll with the motor the NFB would be nice.

you need a transom kit, with the link arm for the chrysler. this is a 1955 15 hp evinrude it did, great mounting kit.

this will get what you need at the transon. this is set up for port side entry, but all you have to do is turn the tube around.

Re: Steering upgrade from a cable pulley system with no steering tube on motor

Thank you very much Tashas Daddy. Do you know how much that easy glyde assembly costs? Per your recomendation, I think I am going to go ahead and buy the Teleflex rotary NFB, its not that much more and it just really makes sense. Using the gas motor to troll is sometimes a lot easier. Anyway, if you have any suggestions for something other than Teleflex I am open to suggestions. It looks like the steering setup is going to be between $200 to $250 without the easy-glyde assembly. Anyway, the picture really helped me see how to set it up. Its kinda a no brainer once you see it.

One other question for anyone out there. The boat I have is pretty old. The only paperwork I have is a Kansas registration from my buddy dated 1996 and it says it is a 1958 with no model listed. There are no markings on the boat anywhere. It is an aluminum v-hull that used to have fins installed on each side of the boat that sort of made it look like a 1957 Chevy Bel-air. I cut the fins off since I am turning this into a bass boat. The fins stuck up about 12 inches at the back of the boat and rolled over inside the whole side of the boat taking up a lot of space. Anyway, I would like to find out how to identify the maker of this boat so I know what I am dealing with. And also so I can list the mfg on the registration when I get to that. I thought the description may be enough since this sounds kind of unusual.

there were a lot of Aluminum boats built with the fins. Hull ID numbers were not required, until 1972, so there is probably no way to trace it. you can look at fiberglassics.com they have some brochures of that vintage aluminum boats. the link in my thread will give you the price of the set up, i also believe Bob's make the same thing. the teleflex will be fine.

A good photo of the boat might help us help you tie down a manufacturer/brand.
