I am sorry to see that politics is now banned because of a few disrespectful individuals that will never admit to themselves it was them. To ask a question then, what is not political? Also at our campfires we almost always have friendly discussions and a lot of things are politicized when being discussed. That is human nature. My solution is warn those who get out of hand, once, twice, then ban those from the forum. We are punishing 99% of the members for the 1% who are not being nice. You can disagree, even passionately, BUT DO NOT CALL NAMES, BERATE THE OTHER SIDE. All sides have merit, even if they are misguided in your opinion. To subject us to censorship (which that is by the way) is truly UN American and in my humble opinion the way the country is going today. This is not what I put on a uniform for years ago. I swore to uphold the constitution of the United States and part of the amendments are FREE SPEECH. When I got discharged, no one released me from that oath. I still believe in free speech and I am very sorry that a couple of bad apples have caused it to disappear here.

Call it what you want mphy98, but this is NOT a political forum, it's a boating forum. The rules have been set and posted. And that's the way it is.

If you want free speech, there are plenty of political forums on the net, join one. If you want to talk boats and other things allowed here at iboats, then welcome and have fun while you are here. Just remember, not all "Speech" is free. This forum has rules, deal with it.

Re: Politics and Iboats dockside chat

My 2 cents, want to talk politics go to a forum devoted to it. Want to talk religion same thing.

As to the way the forum is moderated, i have no Beef. And i have found the mods quite smart, rather funny, and are volunteers. And very even handed.

We don't give them enough respect, and thanks, for doing a good job.
Countless hours they invest in this forum so we can use it freely, and post our advice and opinions.

I have learned to stay within the rules.

Anyone who wants to know what the rules are, just go to the sticky.

Re: Politics and Iboats dockside chat

not unhappy, just very surprised to find that a dockside chat is limited. and i am sure just about anything could be considered political. Yes the mods do a great job, and i thank them for it. Just as in life though anything should be up for discussion, if its motors we have a motor part of this, electrical same thing. It is nice to chat politics or something on the edge with people that share a common interest, that would be boats. Having said that, is there now a list of banned subjects? Global warming? Global climate change? Over fishing? Improper or proper use of chemicals? You see, when you ban one thing it is a slippery slope to banning all. Who is to say what is political and what is not. One mans politics is another's religion. I like to have fun here with people who like boats, but now will have to be very cautious to what I say as it may be political in nature.

To think about it now, the holiday gatherings that I attended would have been much more
pleasing experiences for all there if the "no politics discussion" policy would have been in
effect.

Like it, or not...mphy98 has a valid point:

Politics will decide how, or if, we can enjoy our boating passions.

There are certain 'political' individuals out there...that are working 24/7, to restrict our access to the waterways. And ban PWC's from a great deal of the 'public' waters (trust me, I am all too well acquainted with this). And 'bury' all 2 stroke engines...based on pollution.

When they fail to simply ban us...they figure out that an 'excise' tax, will weed us out....

To assume that we are enjoying our sport...isolated from politics...is simply 'whistleing past the graveyard'.

There needs to be a forum, that addresses our boating 'rights'...and that will be, heaven forbid, political...in the end.

Re: Politics and Iboats dockside chat

A group gathering such as a holiday in a home, is different then here.

The free flowing ideas on politics and religion, among friends and family, is a rewarding, experience, and should be encouraged.

But the difference, is that it is done in person face to face.

But as we know, one can't yell " fire " in a movie theater nor say i have a "bomb" on a airplane.

So all speech is not free, and all places are not the right place to discuss all ideas.

When i signed up and read the rules, i can't say i want the rules changed.
Same as playing any organized sport. You can't change the rules, in the middle of the game.

To the point of guarded posts, yes we must guard against, foul language, sexual remarks, and all the language we don't want youngsters to witness.

I understand your point made so eloquently, Mrphy, it's food for thought.

Re: Politics and Iboats dockside chat

we can discuss any hing we want here......just not politics.
we can discuss global warming. a number of topics. we just cant fight about it or call someone names or belittle them........if we treat someone the way we want to be treated....all is good........in fact treating someone the way we want to be treated is the spirit of this forum (imho)....its all about helping others.....dockside chat is just a place to chat with the people you meet on the forums........this is an awesome community.

You see, when you ban one thing it is a slippery slope to banning all.

........your point is a very good one, but some subjects just stir emotions that cannot be left dormant.

As to the way the forum is moderated, i have no Beef. And i have found the mods quite smart, rather funny, and are volunteers. And very even handed.

can you believe all the carp they put up with...?????? ...for nothing????

well after reading and seeing some of the things on other forums i am quite happy with the way this forum is moderated.

just go to any forum.....have a quick look......within seconds someone will be swearing at someone else....calling them names.....and that thier point of view is dumb..............that does not happen here very often......and when it does......it is stopped .......FAST.

this forum is the best that i have seen,
heck.....a noob just posted in a forum here saying "hi" and was welcomed with open arms.......he was shocked.....with how warm this forum is.....

imho it is the moderation and censorship of certain things that make it as good as it is.....a safe family place.....

ohmigosh......ill get off my soap box now

As DonS said, it's LONG AGO been decided folks. Changes are not coming.

Politics brings out the worst in people, especially politicians. Let it go.

This site is a PRIVATE enterprise. True, you have free access to it but with rules set forth by the owners.

Re: Politics and Iboats dockside chat

For 6 of the almost 8 years that I have been a member, lots of topics were discussed. Many times things got out of hand. Some topics got by that shouldn't have been, members attacking other members, and way too much mudslinging. Many of us tried our best to stress to members on how to word their opinions, but it did not work. Personal attacks got ugly and in September 2007, the owner of the site said limits have been set to be followed strictly. Since that date, he has got what he has asked for.

IMHO, this site may have lost many great minds, but it is a whole lot friendlier. Personally, I stay away from the political minds as my blood pressure cannot stand what has been going on. I rest easier being ignorant of what is going on anyway. Besides, the boating thing is going off in my head a lot lately .....................81 more days to launch :D...........SS

It is nice to chat politics or something on the edge with people that share a common interest, that would be boats. I like to have fun here with people who like boats, but now will have to be very cautious to what I say as it may be political in nature.

I didn't know political discussions were banished from these forums, but I agree with Mphy. Frankly, I think it's a shame that the majority of Americans (in particular) have a) taken to jumping into such complete polar opposite camps that they need to "discuss" politics with such vitriol and one-sided views; and b) because of that we've now become so hyper-sensitive to mere mention of "politics". The more we avoid the topic the more people will run for cover into their separate camps, thus fueling and reinforcing the vicious cycle.

This is not to criticize the iboats folks for their decision. Their decision is really just a symptom of the current state of our inability to have a frank, open, fair and respectful political conversation in our everyday life. I don't blame them.

However, my hope would be that they would take a more progressive view, moderate the forum to eliminate/filter the bad apples (I've never moderated a forum; maybe it's more work than it's worth to filter people?) and foster a respectful political conversation. As Mphy said, what's wrong w/having an non-boat conversation w/people you like hanging out with? Yes, I know there are plenty of forums out there for other topics, but I really like this forum and these people - so why not engage in friendly banter.

Again, I respect iboats decision, and won't waste much time trying to convince them to change their mind. But I did want Mphy to know he wasn't alone! :)

Just remember, you can scream from the rooftops anything you want.

But I decide what's acceptable and what's not in my own home.

This is iboats home.

Devoutly να wish'd.
Than πετούν προς άλλες που δεν γνωρίζουμε;

The last thing we need here is a political thread there are plenty of those in cyber space, the bottom line is no one listens when you explain your position when your face to face,or in cyber space so who needs it,I come to this site to learn a little, laugh a little and practice my typing:D
